I always felt like I’m fairly in-tune to vibrations and what they indicate…until now.

While accelerating, my van gives a lateral shake (side-to-side) – almost like one you’d feel at low speeds due to a slipped belt on a tire, but this is only at 40+mph and only during accelerating.
It also seems to lack a little power.

Some folks have suggested I may have a bad motor mount somewhere.

Anyone have any input on this one?

It may be the tires (rear tires especially) need balanced/rebalanced. An out of balance rear tire feels like a shimmy back and forth in the seat of your pants and can often occur in that speed range.

I would agree with your assessment except if it were a balance issue, wouldn’t I feel the vibration all the time, as long as I stay in that speed range? The thing is, I don’t feel it all the time – only when I’m accelerating. :/

Given what you describe, the vibration can also be a inner cv axle.. if you turn the wheel slightly when it is occurring (turn out of it), and the vibration goes away then an inner cv joint is suspect (the culprit will be the opposite side of which direction you turned the wheel)…

            Good luck

Driving it on the highway this afternoon, I was going around a curve while accelerating and I was still feeling the vibration.

I’m not sure if it’s of any consequence, but this vibration seemed to just come about out of nowhere – all of a sudden.

Based on your description I would say driveline. I’m thinking Toyota Karl might be right with an inner CV joint problem. I actually cover that issue here.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

                  Thanks for the input, fellers!
I noticed today driving home, the vibration is there at slower speeds (again, only during acceleration) but barely noticeable.
I actually watched that video earlier today – do I grab each axle and see if there’s any play in either one?

I just hope it’s not major – if it is, I think it’s time to trade ‘er in.
