Okay I’m going to try and be as specific as possible so please help me out! The car is a 04 Mustang GT manual, There’s no driveability issue really but I did notice that when I get out of work at night (12-2am) and I start driving home, when the RPMs reach about 2000+ there is a whine coming from I’m assuming the engine bay, the whine sounds exactly like a supercharger whine bt obviously this car is not spercharged. I’ve seen other forums about power steering but my steering is fine, no noise, fluid is clean and filled and the whine is only at 2000+ rpm WHEN THE AIR IS COLDER like at night, I live in Florida so in the day time when its hot there’s either no noise or very faint.

At first I thought vacuum leak, a pulley, a bearing, or anything that is engine driven. I had the car checked by a mechanic about 2 weeks ago and he said everything is squared away so I doubt its anything major. But it’s just peace of mind.

I do notice a bit of movement in the belt tensioner pulley while the engine is running if that helps, and about a week ago I cleaned out the IAC and everything from the air filter to the throttle body.

If you can give me some ideas on what this cold be please help me out! or need any more details I’ll be glad to let you know!

      Thanks guys =D

My first thought is to something on the front of the engine. You already said you checked the power steering but you might check the other pulleys to see if one of those is making noise. In addition to the article above this video might be helpful.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Turns out to be the IAC is all worn out and old plus an ill fitting pcv hose. IAC I’m just going to get new but I’m going to find a mustang that someone is parting out to find the hose. Thanks again to everyone and thank you again Eric!

The force is strong with ETCG

There is a TSB for that issue

vehicles with 4.6L engine and built before 1/28/08,
may exhibit a front end accessory drive (FEAD)
related high-pitched metallic whistle/hoot noise after
a cold soak in ambient temperatures below 40 °F
This noise may be caused by the grooved
                  FEAD idler pulley.
NOTE FEAD IDLER PULLEY NOISE MAY BE MOST
APPARENT AT OR NEAR COLD ENGINE IDLE SPEEDS (APPROXIMATELY 1200 RPM).

Well I’ll be damned. So is this something that I can take up with a dealer and have them fix it for little to no cost, or do I have to possibly add an idler pulley to the shopping cart? haha

I looked more into that TSB and it was more directed to the 2007 and 2008 mustangs. Does that exclude my car from this issue?

Or since it was still made before the 2008 cut off date does it still affect mine?

Nah it should still apply, in ’07-’08 (’09 and up they changed the pulley) your engine was more popular so there were more complaints. The idler pulley cant be much (most run about $20 or so) so it could not hurt to give it a try and see if it helps the situation.

true, so I’m on rock auto cause that’s where I shop haha, do I get the pulley that they specify in the TSB with part # 6L3Z-6C348-A? Or is that the bad one I need to avoid?

Sorry for the long delay! I work in a kitchen so free time is scarce haha. Anyway I replaced the idler pulley with a smooth one instead of a grooved pulley. Noise is still there -__- Happens a lot more often now throughout the day and when the RPMs get to 2500 it’s more apparent :pinch:

My next suspicion is maybe the belt itself, doesn’t look too bad, no cracks or damage but I’m kind of stumped at this point. Will keep everyone posted and try to get some video bits of the issue.

                            Thanks again guys!

Have you done anything with the oil lately? I put a synthetic blend into an older car one time without realizing it wasn’t conventional and had a similar noise develop. I actually didn’t realize it was a blend until the noise started and I went back and checked the bottle. If it’s head noise, it could be seem to be coming from the pulleys. Just a thought.

I’ve got an 04 GT as well, so I’m always interested in knowing what people are doing with them, or what common problems are.

I took the belt off and looked over that and checked over all the pulleys, a few were pretty dirty and didn’t spin so freely so I took out the bearings and cleaned them up and the noise has been gone since so whatever the issue was had to do the with the belt drive!
