After trying to sort out the issues with the electrical issues, I wound up having to buy a new battery a week ago. When I went to start it a little bit ago, it acted like the battery was flat, cranking a few times but not starting. When I went to investigate, I noticed there was some sort of liquid all over the top of the battery, brake master cylinder, and intake snorkel. Even though it was a cheap “value” battery, it’s less than a couple weeks old. I’m starting to wonder if the alternator is overcharging the battery like someone had suggested, or not- I’d jump it and take it to a shop, but I can’t be sure if the battery is leaking or if some water just got in, and I don’t want to make any damage worse… I need to rent/buy a multimeter and poke around

If it is leaking its battery acid. Unless the caps were not seated.

I wiped off some of the mystery goo, was black like oil…the label was also slightly brown/black around the edge, where it leaked over. I dornt see why it would suddenly die after being replaced a week er two ago

**Edit: Just jumped it and took to a local auto parts store, they confirmed that the battery exploded and that the goo on top is acid….which would explain the rotten egg smell. On the way back, it started to die on me as I was working through an intersection- only to quickly rev back up. The windows also went up erratically, very fast compared to normal. I have a feeling this will lead me to a new alternator, I don’t know for sure yet though.

hi the black goo i would guess is engine oil.
check around for busted hoses or oil cap not closed proper.

make sure you have the tools like cheap multimeter
don’t guess cause guessing costs $.

Eric and other people on YouTube has many videos on how to check battery .
10 dollar multimeter will do it.
check if voltage on battery is under 12v after you recharge, battery is no good .
if you get 12.6v or around that should be fine for you to start car

Turns out the battery had leaked/”exploded”…not even a week after I bought it. I went to have it tested and they confirmed just by the smell it was dead

I picked up a cheap digital multimeter today, checked the battery terminals and found with the engine off, it was putting out ~12.9 – 13.2 volts. I tried to remove the surface charge, but that did little to help. With the engine on, it was peaking around 16v er so. Tested the alternator with a standalone tester, it passed without issue. Right now, the headlights/DRLs, turn signals and hazard lights don’t work, along with the slew of other problems. I’ve checked all the fuses and they looked ok, and aside from the battery I’m not entirely sure where to start looking w/ a multimeter…
