      Newbie here,

I have a 2004 Honda Pilot and I am the original owner. I have 162,000 miles on the car and recently had my first valve adjustment about four months ago with 161,000 on the odometer. I changed the spark plugs right after the valve adjustment and noticed that one spark plug had oil caked around the threads and another spark plug coil-igniter had what looked like burned oil on the outside. So, after valve adjustment and new spark plugs I am still not happy with the way the car is running. I took it back to the dealership and told them that I thought the valves were still too noisy. They told me that maybe the spark plugs aren’t burning fuel correctly due to the oil getting on the plugs… and added they were not responsible for changing the spark plug seals on the cylinder head cover when performing valve adjustments. So, being a mediocre DIYer I thought I would tackle the job. Well… after close inspection of the front intake manifold chamber I noticed all the screws still lined up with the blue marker settings on the intake manifold chamber and the underside of every allen-wrench type screw still looked brand new.

PS I paid $120.00 for the original valve adjustment because the girl at the service desk made a mistake, but stated she would still stand by the original quote. I think the dealership was pissed and performed a lousy cleaning of the intake manifold… which based on my experience of cleaning this area, does seem to improve performance slightly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

      Skip35

Are you saying that they didn’t perform the valve adjustment?

I suspect, they did not perform the valve adjustment based on my findings of the screws on the front intake manifold looking like they have not been touched and oil is still getting onto two of my spark plugs. Acceleration has not improved either. I dunno

The intake does need to be removed in order to get the valve covers off. Honestly not many techs perform valve adjustments on the J series engine. Most are timid, it’s not for everyone. The burden of proof is on you however. I’m not sure what to tell you other than perhaps contact the Honda customer service department to see if they may be able to step in on your behalf. Just because this is on topic I’ll post this here.

            Keep us posted.

Yes I agree adjusting valves on those J series engines is not for everybody. We have a 2006 & 2011 Pilot and so far they have not had either of those problems. If your engine is running rough and the spark plugs were corroded like that it could be that it’s worn out. But you’d have to do a wet/dry compression test to find out for sure. Good luck and keep us posted.

                Valve adjustment dilemma continued–

Long story short: I called Honda of America and the representative stated there was nothing they(Honda) could do about the situation, because of the mileage and being out of warranty. She told me to contact the dealership(would’ve been 3rd time) to discuss the problem. I gave up on the dealership, because they could care less. For anyone that wants to know the stealer-ship is located in Salisbury, MD.

I am now going to take my 2004 Honda Pilot to another Honda dealership and am hoping for the best. I called and the new Honda dealership and they gave me a quote of $520.00 which would cover all gaskets and spark plug rubber grommets(or whatever they’re called).
