Hi guys, my 2004 Accord V6 w/ 164,000 miles makes a hideous whine when started in cold weather between -20 below zero and 20 degrees. The fill line is not low, and It’s almost as if there’s an air leak in the power steering pump. I also have a 2003 Accord V6 and it does not make the whining sound. Any ideas?
I asked Honda about the pending recall on the power steering hose and they said it was unrelated.

Most common reason I have seen a Honda power steering make noise is from the wrong fluid. I find it rare for those pumps to go bad.
Something to look into. I bought the car used from a Honda dealer and they said they changed it last year.
I wouldn’t worry a whole lot on a honda powersteering. I cracked my rack and yea eventually my PS fluid eventually contaminated and the pump wasn’t happy. But the new pump was $100 from a wreckers and was a 45 minute replacement job. But yea I did get a fluid flush and fill after with honda PS fluid.
When it does make the whining noise when cold, does the fluid froth up inside the reservoir? Its very common on these for the inlet o ring on the pump to fail and cause the fluid to aerate and cause all sorts of racket. If they replaced the power steering hose then they were supposed to change this o ring too. I see them not being replaced all the time.
If you bought it from honda then it should have honda fluid but my guess is either the inlet o-ring(very easy to change) or the pump is failing. The updated inlet o ring should be an orange color. There is one 10mm fastener holding the inlet to the pump.
