Okay so pretty much, 04 GT, manual 98,200 miles and the idle fluctuates between the highest- 1200 and the lowest- 500. When at idle the car makes a weird growling/gargling sound, link to the videos so you can listen. along with a hissing sound, which you can also hear in the video, I’m leaning more towards vacuum leak for the hissing but the rough idle and growl has me stumped.

So far I’ve cleaned the IAC, and everything from the air filter to the throttle body has had a good once over. I’ve tried the whole carb cleaner and still haven’t found the leak. But at this point I’ll try anything! the videos hopefully will help you guys any other questions just let me know. But the hissing sound is definitely coming from somewhere around the intake/throttle body

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING HEADPHONES WHEN WATCHING THE VIDEOS, IT EXPOSES THE SOUNDS A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN SPEAKERS WOULD.

First video is under the hood around the intake and throttle body, for the movement but the growl/hissing both come from around the intake/throttle body

Second is under the car, the growl actually seems alot more louder there then on top.

Any help is appreciated! thanks guys!

Try using a spray bottle with water in it to check for vacuum leaks.

The original IAC valve on those Fords is a huge problem. I bet your AC is or defrost is on and every time the compressor cycles you are hearing that sound. Turn the HVAC controls off and I bet money that the noise goes away.

I recommend that you replace the IAC valve and it should take care of the problem.

Nah unfortunately the noise is there with and without the AC on but the cycle does muffle the sound a little haha. But yeah today I did the whole cigar smoke to find and vacuum leaks and I got nothing so unfortunately it’s gonna have to be the $100 IAC -__-

I agree, found this on the Mustang forums sounds like a common issue.

Its your idle air control valve going bad. The plastic veins that manage/regulate the air coming into the engine at idle are worn down and are beginning to vibrate and not seal. It needs to be replaced and costs about $80-$100 I believe. Essentially the easiest component on this engine to service/replace.

              That fixed it!
The dealer said it was the idle control valve. They replaced the unit and the noise is gone. They said cleaning it may have fixed it but it wouldn’t last long so I told them to replace it.

              Thanks for the help

Sounds about right! When I cleaned it the noise was gone for about 2 or 3 days then started right back up at a much more constant rate. Thanks for the input guys! =D

no problem, good luck hope a new IAC takes care of it.

Definitely sounds like an idle air control motor issue to me as well, although faulty IAC normally has idle control issues. Your car seems to be fairly stable at idle. However the cycling of a failed IAC valve seal does not.

The first thing i would have tried was pulling the electrical harness to the IAC. It will most likely set a p0505 (iac system malfunction) (so dont pay that any mind.) And this will in turn completely close the valve. The car (especially if cold) will try to immediately stall, but you can pull on the throttle cable right next to the throttle body to keep it at idle. As your doing that, see if that cycling sound your experiencing goes away. If it does, you’ll know its a fault with a seal or solenoid in the IAC valve. However if the seal is worn badly enough to where engine vacuum is leaking passed a fully closed seal inside, its still going to make that noise.

Another test would be to completely remove the IAC, and carefully plug the 2 holes where it bolts with clear packing tape (careful enough to make it thick enough where engine vacuum wont suck it inside) and this will bypass the IAC system completely. If your sound goes away completely after that, you will know it is a failed valve.

Sorry for the long reply, but im just throwing some ideas out there for future reference.

And on a small side note.. i had a customer once with a 94 mustang GT that attempted to clean his own IAC with brake clean, and in turn it ate away the rubber seals inside and caused a loping idle from 800-1400. Took the old valve apart and the seals were disintegrated. Installed a new IAC and everything was perfect. Be very careful what you clean them with.

Please let us know if the new IAC fixes your issue.

Thanks again to everyone’s advice and ideas! Over the weekend I’m going to swap the valve and hope everything gets squared away cause that noise is driving me nuts.

But yes I made sure to clean it with throttle body/intake cleaner and not to be too generous with it, a little spray and a Q-tip is what I used to clean it out. But I’ll bite the bullet and invest in a new one 😳 lol

Just wondering if you ever got around to changing out the valve?

I know I’m severely late and I apologize -__- but yes I did change the valve and it fixed the problem, for what it’s worth I bought the one that had a black cap looking thing on it rather than the original type that came on my car (still motorcraft though) and works like a charm, again sorry for the really late reply!
