      2004 Ford F150 4×4 5.4Lt Triton V8

Problems- Been sitting for a while. Last time I used the truck, it kind of sputtered and died.

Could i change only the fuel pump instead of the whole module?

Truck only starts when the pump primes.
If it doesn’t prime, it will crank but no go.
When its on, it will sputter and die after a while. Try to turn it on again after that and it wont turn back on. So I came to the conclusion that this pump needs to go. I think it may have the oem one in there. Just need to know if i should/could change only the pump or just replace the whole module.

Ps: Already replaced notorious fuel module problem with a brand new one and reset the pump. No such luck.

Any advice on this would be very appreciated. Thanks

May be worth doing some more diagnostics just because the in-tank fuel pumps can be a bit of a pain to do. If you can get at the connector, try back probing it and make sure it’s receiving power when it’s supposed to. If the power is there but it’s not running/priming, then that does point to the pump. Otherwise you have an electrical problem somewhere else (ignition switch, etc).

When the pump is running but the engine sputters can you try testing for fuel pressure (if you have access to a gauge). Has the fuel filter ever been replaced?

As far as just replacing the pump, IMO if you go through all the trouble of getting at the pump, might as well replace the whole unit. It would suck to have something else go bad (like the sending unit) just after you replace the pump.

your best bet is to test fuel pressure with a fuel
          pressure gauge.

+1 with the above 2 posts.

Its always best to gather evidence before condemning parts.

You should be able to loan out a fuel pressure tester from any good auto parts store.

Yea check the fuel pressure and verify that the fuel pump is the issue before you go swapping it out.

Thanks for all your help. Had it checked out.. There was no pressure going through the fuel lines so I’ll need a new pump. Bought the new one but I’m having trouble removing the old pump out of there.

There’s a green and yellow clip I can’t remove from the pump itself. Any idea how to remove and if I break one, can I buy a replacement at the auto parts store?

Push the clip IN to release. You cannot buy the clips seperately so try your best not to break it. If broken, you need to change the entire line.
