Hey all, my neighbor has a 04 Ford pickup with a dual overhead cam motor. It’s been reliable for the most part except for the past couple of days. It’s been running extremely rough at lower rpms. He’s replaced a couple of sensors on this thing and still the same problem. The mans tight on money due to serious illness and can’t afford to take it to a dealer at the moment. I don’t think its been throwing any codes either.
Anyone hear about this type of an issue, or are there any suggestions where I can start to look to help solve the problem.
Thanks. This forum has been a great help for me in the past, so I figured I would help him by trying to get an answer here.

As i’ve been reading about this year of pickup, it seems there are lots of people that have this very same issue. Not getting to many solutions though. It seems it goes from bad coil packs to a vct valve.

I would start with checking for any codes that it might have as they would be your best clues as to what the problem is. If you don’t have any then I would do a power balance test to see if it’s one or more cylinders that are the problem, here’s a video that should help you with that, BTW you can also disconnect the injector connectors if you don’t have coil packs or they are difficult to get to.

You might also check for vacuum leaks as those can cause quite a few problems as well. Basically go for simple stuff and stay away from trying to replace sensors that you don’t have codes for.
