My Friend has a 04 Ford Expedition 5.7l I think, He called me and said the engine started to knock. He checked the oil servicing it was within limits. My friend took it to a mechanic who checked saying the engine is going bad. So my friend is looking at possible engine replacement. I heard on Expedition and Navigators you have to remove the body. Is this true and is there another to remove the engine. And is it better to do a overhaul or complete engine replacement. The mileage is 150K. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
      Repsectfully,

I just did an 03 ford f-250 with a 5.4 and didn’t have to lift the body off.. Actually, besides the rusted exhaust manifold bolts it was really nothing. Saturn vue all wheel drive much harder than ford 5.4.

          That Ford has a 4.6 or a 5.4.

I have never replaced an engine in an Expedition but i would be curious if you can drop the subframe with the engine intact as you use a lift to raise the vehicle up?

What methods of testing did the ‘mechanic’ do to confirm his diagnosis?

It seems too low of mileage for an engine failure to occur unless the vehicle was not properly maintained.

Nope, the body has to come off the frame to do that replacement, here’s a video.
