      Hi there everyone.

Ive got a 2004 ford escape with the 3.0 liter v6 in it. its got a couple of noises that i was wondering if anyone would be able to provide insight on. there is a rattle in the bottom end of engine. that appears to almost come and go. Goes away entirely at speed. but when you stop and sit for a few seconds it seems to return for a few seconds at a time. ive got no ideas my self on this.

Second is the other day when i started the vehicle up. There was a loud almost like grinding noise but not exactly a grinding noise i just dont know how to describe it. it is coming from the serpentine belt area, now the noise seems to dimish when you cycle the ac on and off. and it also appears to go away once the vehicle is warmed up and doesnt want to come back until the engine starts cold. now i thought this may have been the water pump until today. I pulled up at a stop and the noise returned. but as soon as i let off the brake and hit the gas. the noise is gone again. if anyone has some insight of where even to look for this noise. it would be greatly appreciated. Like i said i think its the water pump. but after today i am unsure. Oh and sorry the vehicle has just over 165,000 miles.

Once again and advice is greatly appreciated.

Don’t know about the “rattle” in the bottom end of the engine. Is it a “tinny” noise or does it sound like “rocks in a tin can”? Th eserpentine belt noise you are hearing could be an alternator bearing or one of the idlers/tensioners for the serpentine belt. the way i check is to release tension on the serp belt tugging and spinning all the things it drives looking for noise and play. Since it changes when you cycle the A/C I do suspect an idler/tensioner ready to fail.

thanks for the reply sunset. and now that you mention it. it is more like rocks in a tin can type of rattle. didnt even think to see it that way. and as for the noise ill check the idler pully tomorrow after work. thanks again for the reply

For the rattle. check the exhaust heat shields.

Heat shields is a great thought for the noise if it’s tinny and shallow in sound. A heavier sound like rocks in a tin can might be the insides of the catalytic converter(s) that have broken up.

It’s possible that the A/C compressor bearing is worn. Drive it without the A/C on and when you hear the noise turn thr A/C on to see if the noise goes away. Those vehicles were bad for alternator bearings, tensioner bearings as well.

The water pump is on the drivers side of the engine.

Okay i found the problem it turned out to be the ac compressor clutch. The bearing were so shot that they were falling out as i took the clutch off. as for both sounds this one part seemed to cause both sounds to disappear entirely. once again thank you guys for your advice!
