So my mom brought her truck over today (2004 f-150 4.6 2wd 8.8″ rear) and she wanted me to fix her rear axle seals. Took a look and sure enough the passenger side was leaking.

So I get to tearing it down and the diff pin retaining bolt rounds off on me (btw jb weld and an old socket is my new go-to move for rounded off bolts). Not the problem though.

The problem I’m having is actually getting the differential pin out. For some reason it isn’t coming out even after a few love taps. With the retaining bolt out, it should just slide out right? Is there anything other than the retaining bolt that I have to mess with to get the pin out?

The pin that goes through the spider gears needs to be removed to push the axles back to expose and remove the c-clip for axle removal, and the bolt that holds the pin in place needs removed (Just to confirm what you are trying to do)

Have you slightly rotated the differential assembly to adjust the position of the pin on spider gears (lift rear end off the ground) and turn the wheels/assembly ever so slightly to let the pin just slide out? Perhaps the pin is under tension (hopefully you do not have to make adjustments to the lash)… LOL…

P.S. I use craftsman “Bolt outs” for those bolts that get stripped… Did you use a 12pt to try to remove these bolts?

        good luck

Did the entire locking bolt come out? I had a few break when they were removed. It’s not a limited slip differential is it?

no it turns out half the shank broke on the locking bolt. Didn’t realize it until I got a new bolt for it. I ended up fishing the broken piece out with a magnet and the pin slid right out.

actually scared the crap outta me for a little while. I wasn’t looking forward to drilling out the diff pin if I couldn’t get the rest of the bolt out
