I did some research on this and you might want to check for a restricted exhaust. Here’s a video on how to do that.
If the exhaust is restricted, performance will be compromised and it might set that code. You might also find this information helpful.

Eric. Thank you for the advice using a vacuum gage to see if the exhaust system was restricted. I bought a new one and tests showed ok. As I mention before, I originally had a P0404 and P0172. After changing the egr,pcv valves,and spark plugs, the code P0040 is no longer there. I still have the P0172 and a new P0118.
the engine runs smoothly but it wont go faster than 40 to 50 miles and gears take a long time to engage.
any suggestions?

The P0172 may indicate a fuel injector issue. The P0118 could have something to do with the coolant temp sensor. Both things can effect overall engine performance and could possible cause, or contribute to the problem.
