Hi there, I did a tune up on a friends 04 Impala changed wires, plugs, air filter, and pcv. I put it all together again and now it doesn’t want to start. I have been trying to trace it back to what I did to see if I knocked anything lose. It cranks no problem, but doesn’t seem to fire. i fed it ether once and it turned over but didn’t continue to run. i ran a obd on it and in the advanced dtc’s i got a p0230 code primary fuel circuit. I don’t understand how the tune up would cause the fuel circuit to fail. is there something i am doing wrong or missing. I thought it had to do with intake since i took the maf off and cleaned it when i changed the air filter and my moms car couldn’t start with a bad maf. Please help!!!

I would start with what you did.
Recheck the firing order, and the gap on the plugs you installed.
If those proves to be correct.
Then I would proceed to checking if you have spark and fuel pressure.

I did seem to fire on the ether so i’d imagine there is spark but will check everything again, but now i notice the fuel pump doesn’t activate when i turn the key to the on position.

Good reason to check to see if you have fuel pressure.
Might try looking for a blown fuse, and if there is voltage at the fuel pump connection

yea that’s what I am trying now, except having hard time finding the connector and harness. Want to test relays but never have done so before so waiting for a friend to come over and show me but from what i heard is you can hear them but i hear nothing or feel nothing when key is turned to on position but why would both the day time running light relay and fuel pump relay blow at same time. Either way testing the fuel pump connector will answer a lot.

fuel pump works was able o jump from fuse block but its not getting power to the fuse block. Any ideas on what would be the cause?

You’ll need to get a wiring diagram for your specific make/model car to trace the wiring

after a bit of reading i found out its a security or anti theft system preventing the fuel pump from getting power. It seems to be a big thing with them and I read you leave the key on the on position until the security light shuts of then it starts? i will try this as it is flashing the anti theft light

This may be the wrong place to post but Im new to forums in general….

                      2004 Impala

I have been trying to figure this out since last October and have had no luck.

One day the car would not start since the battery was dead, not sure what drained it.
I tried to jump the car and I have only been able to get about a 1/4 crank or the engine turns over about a 1/4 of the way and stops. Same result over and over until one day in december it actually started! I drove it, parked it and again it would not start.

I changed the starter with rebuilt and had the old and rebuilt tested, both are ok.

After the 1/4 crank, the power in the cab goes out and comes back when I turn the key to off and back to on.

I posted these videos to help gauge the problem.

If I should post somewhere else, please direct me. 🙂
Any help is appreciated, I would hate to give the car to a salvage yard as it only has 130k and drives like a champ if I can get it started.

Have you done a voltage drop test on the starter secondary circuit?

I have not successfully, I can barely read the meter that is sitting on top of the engine while I am in the car turning the key. (I dont have an extra set of hands 99% of the time)
I downloaded a drop test checklist that I will try this week if I can get a helper. (attached the list, not sure if it is complete since it does not mention a starter test)

doing a voltage drop test is a waste of time you say it cranks fine no fuel though, try swapping relays? have a remote start or aftermarket anti theft? I know these over ride the fuel pump relay…good place to start. You say you have no power to fuse block? There is a fuel pump relay fuse 15A check that out … on the other side of the relay there is 12v power to the coil side when key is turned to run. this is pcm controlled 12v for 2 sec.

Thanks for the tips, after all the effort, changing starters, checking wires and connections, and all the input from the world wide network of automotive technicians….it was a dead battery. smh…

take a wire with an alligator clip on it, clip it to the starter (small bolt) – not the wire from the battery to the big bolt on the starter.

Then (while standing to the side of the vehicle) – touch the wire to the positive of the battery – I say stand to the side, just by some odd chance,
that car is in gear – you do not want it to run you over.

That will eliminate the ignition switch and neutral safety switch – if it still only turns a 1/4 crank
