Hi I’m new to the forum and I’ve been having this issue for almost a year now so I’m hoping this may help me somehow.

So I have a 2003 Lincoln Town Car with 86k on the odometer and it has one very irritating issue. Drives just fine, tranny is all good, just passed NYS inspection with ease, but when I’m at a red light (for example) and I’m sitting with my foot on the brake in drive for more than about 10-20 seconds, a rough idle kicks in and my whole car shakes like a cylinder or two has just shit the bed. There’s a loss of power for about 20 more seconds when you finally give it gas and drive, then it’s all good again. Never has it actually stalled out though.

Another thing to mention is that when it does this, engine light comes on and it’s a code for coils. I’ve went through coil packs a few times because of this. So now I completely avoid the idling by putting it in park or neutral when stopped, and it doesn’t have any problem.
I’ve talked to many people, even mechanics and no one seems to know about this. My guesses are a possible vacuum leak, a bad fuel and air mixture, TPS, or just too low of an idle. Each of these makes sense to me but I can’t quite figure it out. I know Fords from 90’s to early 2000’s are kind of notorious for idling troubles of many types but I’d like to get this solved.

Any help on diagnosing would be greatly appreciated or some suggestions would also be great help. Thanks – Tyler

Yeah I just looked them up on ebay, pretty cheap. So all I would do is plug it into the car and the other end into my computer? Is there a program to download that shows the data and all that?

If you get a USB or Bluetooth one, there are free Android or iOS apps that you can install. If you are looking for a USB tool to use with a PC or laptop, I recommend the ElmScan 5, it is usually around $25, and comes with a license for the OBDwiz software, which is very good software for the price (free).

Hey man. That sounds exactly like my deal too. I still have yet to figure it out & honestly for the past year I pop it in Neutral or park at a stop light and it doesn’t misfire. Try it out. I know it’s not a proper fix but oh well haha. What kind of air filter is in your Lincoln?

I bet it’s a bad EGR valve if these cars had one. My dad had a 99 F150 with the 4.6 V8 and it did the same thing. Replaced the EGR valve and it was fixed. Idled poorly in gear, but did not throw a code.

Hi Tyler,I been putting it in neutral at stop lights too for the past year no problem there…gotta be a reason though I cant seem sto find it anywhere,I even spent a couple of bucks on that Ask A tech page…he said something about maybe antifreeze is leaking on manifold….ahahh! Im thinking its an electrical computer glitch cause it happens and takes the same amount of time to stop missing everytime. Last person I talked to said maybe a vacuum hose was leaking……well Ill keep trying thanks for the info
