      Ok, Some of you whom follow the ETCG facebook have seen this come up here and there on the page… my 03 T&C likes to bog down around 40-45MPH and I’ve done EVERYTHING I can think of to fix it… the symptoms- Accelerating very moderately the car will accelerate normally until you hit 40MPH, then the RPM’s drop down to 1000 and sometimes below, the car will make a vibrating sound and at times will shudder and shake. Stepping on the accelerator pedal will make it run fine and go normally, but if you let up or go back to where you were before the car will lug down again and try to stall, which it has not done yet….

      on the list of things I’ve done:

      intake-upper and lower gaskets replaced (fun job)

      New TPS,

      Fixed a couple vac leaks,

      New plugs, Wires, Coil

      Cleaned intake, intake runners

      new MAP

      Propane pencil test checking for intake leaks

      Transmission shop 3 times to check for an over locking Torque converter (no faults)

      Brand new set of injectors (x6)

      Ispected the injection harness.

      Fuel pressure check…

      I’d like to fix this… I get the P0301 Code sometimes others are P0300/03 other things I’ve noticed the OBD reader changes my Fuel system status to OL-Drive CL-Fault CL-drive…. Any ideas would be greatly apprciated….

        I didn’t dig through all that data but Eric says your vehicle has a miss.

        The Federal Government mandates the engine computer’s emission tests. I drive a 2003 Mitsubishi. When its engine computer detected a miss the computer started shutting off fuel to various cylinders. When this occurred, my car’s symptoms matched exactly what you are experiencing. So, since the government is involved I’m assuming all vehicles made back then can do this.

        I don’t know exactly when but vehicles made a year or two later would no longer shut off fuel to selected cylinders when a miss was detected. I assume the Federal Government allowed car makers to remove this troublesome bit of code. A miss detected by the engine computer was not always a miss.

        So, if Eric is right and I’m right (that could be a stretch), fix the miss and the problem should be gone.

          thank you for the replies, my Cyl Misfire was gone until today when they retested everyting. they knocked off one of my vacuum repairs.. either accidental or purposeful. either way I found it, the CEL came on after and I’ll read the code. but how it was running. it was a CYL misfire. btdt– and actually got out the computer diagnostic equipment. I wont go into the Complete and utter farce that happened when I got there. needless to say, I about forced their lead ‘trans tech’ to walk a mile back to the dealership… and it only escalated from there….. but, apparently the Torque converter is the issue. they wanted 1900 to repair. I said No way. I called a trusted trans shop for another opinion. they’d charge me 350.00 to replace it. so, until the next update—

            Honestly, $350 sounds a little low if they’re actually replacing the torque converter– they have to R&R the tranny to do that. What’s frustrating about this is that there was a TSB and a re-flash issued for torque converter shudder in these vehicles– without it in front of me, I can’t remember if it applied to your year or not though. (I have to dig out my ITIL/ISIS DVD to check– maybe someone else has more ready access.) In other words if the dealer just did what you asked them to, it might have corrected the problem. You could call around and see if there’s an independent shop that has a Chrysler DRBIII scan tool and can do the flash– I don’t think any aftermarket tools can flash the TCM (could be wrong).

            Also, I’d like to know how they reached the conclusion that the actual converter is at fault. Did they run pressure tests to see what the converter clutch is being commanded to do? If I remember correctly, the converter clutch on these vehicles is held in the off position by pressure in the aptly named “Torque Converter Off” hydraulic circuit– when the vehicle is at speed, this is controlled by the L/R solenoid. There is a pressure test port just below the solenoid pack (they look like small bolts), the third one from the left is is the Torque Converter Off test port and should read more than 60 psi when the converter clutch is off and 5psi or less when the converter is on. You can attach a gauge, duct tape it to the windshield and go for a drive to see what is going on.

              The plot thickens for sure. Were they specific in what was wrong with the torque converter? The reason I ask is because I hear that diagnosis a lot and it’s not often accurate. The only way a torque converter can cause an issue like that is if it stays in lock up and that’s not likely to happen and even if it did, I don’t think it would react that way if the torque converter was the problem. It’s one thing to say you need a transmission rebuild or replacement that includes a torque converter, but quite another to say the torque converter is at fault. In fact, I write about this very thing in this article.
