2003 Saturn Ion 1 with intermittent crank-but-no-start issue. Not related to cold weather non-starting problems that some have. Despite online advice to the contrary, I do want to try the “cut-the-white-wire” solution. Except that where the white wire should be, there is not a white wire. This Ion has 179K miles, has been totaled twice, and has had a tree fall on it. Still, it runs well and the AC is cold! I just want this passlock thing over with. Where is the white wire? Grateful for all help.

First off no one has any idea what the “white wire” is, you have to give us a little more of a description. Second how do you know this “white wire” is the issue? Have you checked spark? fuel pressure? injector pulse? Compression? You shouldn’t just go blowing through wires, that’s when real problems start.

The 2 white wires (sometimes orange0 run from the cylinder into a connector block at the bottom of the column. The 2 white wires are a smaller gauge. That’s how I identify them. Honestly, I work for gm for 6 years and have dealt with several hack job guys and have never heard of cutting them to fix it. I know you can install a resistor in the circuit but not cutting them. You’d be a lot better off looking for an aftermarket part than trying to hack it together. 100 part is cheaper than a new car and more reliable than cutting wires.

Sorry, being a former gm tech I knew exactly what he was after haha

see if this helps. 🙂 We won’t talk about the white wire. 😉

The white wire cutting idea seems to work for some folks, but the resistor idea is out there a lot, too. That may be thing to try. I have four other vehicles so getting stranded in the driveway is not a concern. Thanks for your response.

1st off pass key 2 is a piece of crap… Even when the systems were new gm had a lot of problems that usually resulted in new ignition,BCM, and wiring because they had no clue why their systems were finicky.
That said cutting the white wire (which should be there) will only work if a few parameters are met. Get the car to start 1st and then cut it.
This sets up a pass/fail code that allows the system to be ignored. The only problem with that is if the code ever gets cleared or the battery gets changed the system will reset and self test on next key cycle which will result a fail causing bigger problem than what you had before because now the wire is cut.
That white wire is being monitored by the BCM for 5 volts in the run position and below 5 volts in the crank position but remaining consistent every time.
There is a campaign 14063 that applies to that vehicle which could result in a free repair. If 14063 applies then gm will also do 14113 and 14133 for a key and cylinder.
I would give you a word of caution on doing bypass on vtd systems period.
                  Don’t do it!
