We have a 2003 Alero with the 3.4l V6(3400) and the radiator fans do not turn on unless the AC is on.

I’m reading many sites, and it’s all leading to the PCM being bad. I have not had any other issues with stalling, hard to start, or anything that would seem to be pointing to a bad PCM/ECU except the engine light.

I’ve checked fuses, and relays but if they’re turning on with the AC on, I feel as if there shouldn’t be an issue.

I see there is many different fuses and relays for the Cooling fans, but does anyone know which relay controls which features?

I believe your car has a fan control module, so hopefully you won’t be out a PCM. If you haven’t yet obtained the relevant circuit diagram for your car, that’s the place to start.

Wait, you have a check engine light? What code?

I don’t know the code, I don’t have a code reader. My engine light has been on for quiet some time(around the time I replaced the catalytic converter).

All the shops around are closed up until monday, so I’d have to wait until then to get the code.

I would like to know which relay controls which switch/fan mode so I know which fuse or relay to replace(as a test) because I don’t have a multimeter to test them.

You can get the circuit diagrams by downloading the factory service manual or buying the Haynes manual from your local auto parts store. They are open 7 days a week and will pull your codes for free.

I live in Canada, our auto parts stores do not scan cars(at least anywhere around here, yes I’ve asked)

I’ll get codes on monday, and get post updates.

You live in Canada and it is cold. Does your car overheat? Do your fans turn on with defrost on? If car does not overheat, you may not even have problem, just does not get hot enough to need fans. Without fans your noticeable point of heat would be stopped in traffic. If there is a problem with fans, you CEL may be related if not, good chance CEL is for something else.

                Best of luck

I still haven’t got the engine codes yet, but I do not let the car “overheat” but I let it get up past the halfway mark, but not to the 3/4 mark. It only does this while stopped in traffic.

It’s currently pretty cold, that it stays cold while driving but heats over the halfway mark while parked.

Update: About 3 days ago when I went to have the codes scanned, the engine light went off, and the fans started to magically work again. Is this a clue to predicting a possible problem?

If you had a shop pull these for you, you might check with them to see if they did anything. Could have intermittent problem with wiring etc. Hard to say without being there to test car. Best of luck.
