try doing a power balance test. try spark and injectors._x000D_

Those engines are know for premature failure due to piston ring issues. If you are suffering from excessive oil consumption, you will need to rebuild the engine._x000D_

They also have a recall for PCM reprogramming to reduce fuel mixture as well as issues witJuly 25, 2012 at 11:00 am #459338Excellent posts above.

I’m using cheap NGK V-Power plugs to check just to see if it was the old plugJuly 26, 2012 at 11:00 am #459339Thanks for the responses everyone._x000D_

I’ve done all the recalls for sensors and fuel pump assembly on the car. I’m aware of the many design flaws such as the butterfly screws (did the loc-tite) and disintegrating pre-cats in the header (catless header insJuly 26, 2012 at 11:00 am #459340it would be better for the power balance test to be done_x000D_

Now that I know it’s cylinder #4 and knowing the following information:_x000D_

-spark plugs have less than 5000 miles on them_x000D_
-short term fuel trim holds at -11 or more during idle. This is consistent and hoAugust 3, 2012 at 11:00 am #459344BTW, I do plan to swap the coils and see if the code goes to the other cylinder. But the misfire happens so randomly and sometime it doesn’t happen for weeks. Can I do a resistance check on the coils too and compare it to the others?

But for the LTFT numbers, it is taking away some fuel but it seems like its within specs._x000D_

If you want to chase injectors you could do a injectorFebruary 10, 2013 at 6:19 am #499186After seeing the code for cylinder 4 misfire, I swapped ignition coils with #1.
Months later, it’s misfireing more frequently and I happened to catch the right moment to do the power balance test. It was missing randomly and inconsistently. #1 now has the questionable ignition coil.
Disconnected #1 and the miss was rythmic. Put #1 back on and disconnected the others. With any others disconnected, the miss was more frequent. I would hear a double miss from time to time. This pointed to #1 missing plus the disconnected cylinder also missing.
I bought a new ignition coil at O’Reily’s and the problem’s now fixed.
Thanks to Eric and others for their advice on the power balance test. Luckily I didn’t listen to the auto shops advice to replace the headgasket. I just didn’t see any symptoms like missing coolant or oil or bad compression test numbers to point to a bad headgasket.
Should I replace all the ignition coils? Or should I just wait for them to go bad individually. I figure if one went bad, the rest would soon follow.
