      Hi all! I’m new here.

Anyways, my friend told me her (dad’s) 2003 Mazda Protege, I believe DX trim with manual transmission, has some recent issues.

      1. Stalling when braking with transmission in neutral.
      2. Jerking when accelerating.

As far as stalling, I suspect a stuck idle air control valve, since I had a similar issue with my 2001 Honda Accord V6. Also could be a dirty MAF sensor.

For jerky acceleration, my classmate suggested one or both of the fuel filters are dirty, or faulty PCV valve.

I asked to hopefully bring the car to my place this Saturday so my classmate and I can check it over, since we’re both currently automotive students, he has a scan tool, and we have another project to attend to that day. Just asking on here to see if we’re going in the right direction.

Idle air control valve It’s the first thing to check if the car stop at idle. But you have the air filter to check if It dirty, clean the mas air flow whit sensor cleaner. All thing whit air first. The you can check the valve whit a pressure gage.

For the acceleration It’s might cause by a lack of performance (less air in your engine) so the combustion is not enough good to unleash the power It need.

Before you go replacing a bunch of parts I think you should also check for vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks can cause all kinds of performance issues including stalling.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Unfortunately, the meeting date didn’t work out between my classmate and friend the the Protege, not to mention my friend’s father (actual Protege owner) doensn’t personally know me well and is already reluctant to let me near the car. 🙁

I’ll definitely keep all your suggestions in mind for future reference.
              Thanks again.

Another thought came to mind based on that description and that’s the TCC clutch. If that’s having an issue it could also cause those issues.

I suppose that doesn’t matter now that you’re not working on the vehicle. If you can find out what happened to it and let us know the outcome.
