Hi there… I have a 2003 jeep liberty with a 3.7 v6… It runs very rough and has a nasty exhaust leak at the flange area. I’m getting miss codes on 3 different cylinders and a speed sensor code. Tonight when I started I I noticed I could hear a rattling clanking sound from the passenger side bank in the top end. I’ve worked on cars since I was 13 just not on chrystler products. After studying some stuff on the net I’m wondering I its a broken valve or valve keeper. I have not done a compression test yet but plan to. But that sound from one side wouldn’t explain the misses in the other two cylinders would it? Thoughts and opinion on this would be greatly appreciated. I’ll also leave you a little bit of gear head porn that I’ve been building from the ground up…

From the looks of it, it could have a “misfire” or two. Maybe some valve overlap causing a rough idle.

That pic doesn’t look anything like a Jeep. 🙂
That said, starting with mechanical is a good call in my opinion. Do the compression test and see what you come up with. You might also consider a power balance test which is covered here.

Ok.. When I get home today I will fire up the wood stove and pull it in the garage and do a compression test…crappy is if its the valve in gonna have to tear down the motor and have to have the heads redone as Long as it hasn’t trashed them…I figure its worth fixing cause 1 she loves it and two we traded a 97 Oldsmobile silhouette for it that was rusting apart with other issues and the liberty is nice…
