What’s up fellow ETCG-ians. I need everyone’s help on this matter.
I have a 2003 Hyundai Sonata 6cyl. Recently, the steering rack was busted and so I got that replaced by a mechanic because it was too big of a repair for me. Anyway, After I got that replaced, I was advised to get my upper control arms replaced soon. After I got my steering rack replaced, everything was great, no wandering of the steering, easy to track a straight line. However, there still is shaking of the steering which I assume is because of the UCAs. Now that is not the issue I’m having. Disclaimer, the alignment is off by about 10-15 degrees. Recently, when I accelerate from a dead stop to 10-20 mph, I feel a pop or a click in my steering wheel  . This goes away at higher speeds. When the car is at standstill, this does not happen when I rotate the steering. I have had ball joints replaced on it about 10k miles ago. I thought maybe a brake pad was loose or something, however I checked and reinstalled everything and the problem seems to continue. My tie rod ends have not been replaced. Inner tie rods were included in the new steering rack. So my question to all of you is what should I be checking? what could a possible problem be? Please reply with detailed information. I’m quite worried because the steering rack replacement was EXPENSIVE 🙁 .
      I await your replies.
      Stay dirty! 🙂

You should get your alignment done ASAP after tie rod replacement. I assume you wanted to say .5 to 1 degree as 10 degree … you would drive with the tire screaming help me !!!

I would consider checking where your mechanic did the work. he may have bent a backing plate trying to remove the tie rod. I don’t know if he had to drop the cradle to replace the rack but it the main bolt are not secure properly it goes from a thumping noise to a clicking noise. Also maybe the rack is not secure properly as well as the swaybar link kit.

A link kit would make sense if he did drop the cradle and need to remove the link… as those are a pain in the butt to remove sometime and may have not been reinstall quite tight enough and have loosen up after you driving it for a little while.

If it’s a vibration you’re dealing with, it’s more likely to be a tire problem. The other ‘popping’ noise may be loose suspension parts. I think for starters a good inspection of the suspension would be a good place to start. You can’t perform an alignment if you have loose suspension parts so you’ll have to address those first. More information in these articles including a video on how to inspect the suspension for noise.
