Hello ECTG team and forum readers,

I have a 2003 Honda CR-V with inner tie rods to be changed. The procedure in the shop manual starts by removing the steering rack (I’m surprised they didn’t propose to remove the engine has an other option!) and then tie rods. Well being short on time, I didn’t want to remove the rack… So I failed with the special tool (1. Pipe too short, 2. No room at the head to reach the hexagon portion) and there’s no room to use wrenches.

Any suggestions to solve this marvel of japanese engineering?

Options are: Pipewrench, crowfoot wrench or remove the rack (or engine !!).

      Thanks.

I would try diffrent auto part store some of them have diffrent loner parts … one might be longer then the others… but I have never had problem with getting the bold out of the inner with there tool… if not you might be able to get the tool from the bottem

I was in a jam one time and it was like 3am ……had to replace the inner tie rods with no tool. I tack welded the 2 pieces together at the joint and then just unscrewed it from the end. You could also jam a screw driver in the joint.

Did inners on my 2003 crv. Went from up above with a 29mm crowfoot wrench. Had it done in under 30 minutes.

I can access the nut with the crow foot the same way you did, but how did you unbend the lock washers?

Just muscle it out. By the time they need to be replaced they shouldn’t be that tough. Mine came pretty easy with a 1/2” drive 18” breaker bar. Nothing was damaged. Once it moved to where I could get it a 90degree pair of needle nose did the rest.

Do you mean you just took the breaker bar to unscrew the rod while fixing the bracket with a wrench/bar, and the rod turned a bit even with the washer on? And after the rod backed up a bit you had room to grab the washer with pliers?

I just tried this on a 2006 Honda CR-V. I had the same issue with the rental tool. Too short, no clearance.

Two real big tips here. First, undo the lock washers.

I spent too much time and torque trying to muscle it off without having undone the lock washers.

The second big tip is to get both wheels off the ground, and adjust the steering to where you can get the most clearance from the top, for whatever tool you are using. There are a few positions available with considerably more clearance.

I got it started with an air chisel (probably shouldn’t have) then I used vise grips on the 29mm that came with the rental kit. A 29mm Crows foot is really what was needed, but I did not have access to one. There is also a collar tool that looks like it would work well “Inner Tie Rod Tool 27-42mm Hex Wrench” for about US$15 but I cannot say from experience.
