      Hi Guys

      I have a 2003 Ford Taurus 3.0liter Dohc 24 valve car has 140k miles
engine that has a couple issues the engine runs smooth. no check engine lights.

1If you hit the gas pedal to 2000 rpm then it drops to 1500rpm stays there for about 30 sec or so then drops to 1100-1200 rpm with the climate control on it drops to 900rpm

2 when Driving the car you touch the gas pedal once thats it the car stays around 1500 rpm going up hills travels around 35-40 mph .Hitting the brakes slows the car but the engine rpm remains constant. I put the car in neutral while the engine rpm remains the same.

      Any thoughts

      thanks in advance

      Len

sounds like your IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) needs to be replaced, same thing happend on my 99 sonoma, but mine would stay idling around 1800-2000..

the other thing I need a better manual than the Haynes repair book.

I need a Factory service Manual with Great electrical diagrams.

              any thoughts
              thanks

One option is Alldata’s DIY option. $25.00 gets you access to one vehicle for a year.

You really need a scanner that has datastream. Find out what your fuel trims are for idle, 1000,1500,2000 RPM both short term and long term. If your numbers are positive (especially at idle) over about 10% you most likely have an air leak or a MAF sensor issue.

Ok Thanks. I do need a good spec sheet and diagrams to diagnose the problem. I do have a scan tool, but I don’t what the norm values are for this vehicle

                  thank you

In a healthy engine short and long term fuel trims should be about 5% plus or minus.

This is a bit in depth, but a great introduction to understanding fuel trims.

Before you get too deep into diagnosing try removing the neg. battery cable for an hour or so and reconnect it. I have had some success doing this on Fords with idle speed problems.

Good point, force a idle relearn.

Ran into a similar problem with GM EGR solenoids they wont do a closed percentage relearn until the battery is disconnected, not even clearing codes will help.

                            Guys

Problem solved and follow up with the car

Thanks alot for your input and suggestions. I took the car to the mechanic. Here is how I made out
                            he found the following

                            1. bad fuel pump
                            2. cracked fuel pump gasket
                            3. A PVC valve that wouldn’t close <<< the cause of the high idle
                            4. he said the thermostat should be 188higher.

I hope this helps someone else

                            thanks

The mechanic did smoke the vehicle no leaks.

I wanted to follow up in case someone else is having a similar problem something else to check

Couldn’t fuel pressure be verified? Wouldn’t this point to the air side of fuel trim If verified…ie a vacuum leak, maf sensor And vice versa?
