My 2003 Ford Taurus makes an odd sound when I turn the steering wheel. It is not the power steering pump. It only happens when the weather is cold. It is a rubbing sound. It is getting louder. It has been doing this for 3 years. What is it? Is it serious? Can I fix it by spraying silicone spray somewhere? I can feel the rubbing in the steering wheel with my hands. It sounds like it is coming from the steering column. It gets louder as the temperature gets colder. I live in Nebraska and it can get down to -22 here.

      Thank you 🙂

I suspect it’s a symptom often referred to as ‘morning sickness’. It’s likely coming from the PS rack. That said, you might try changing the fluid or putting power steering conditioner in the system. If you do use conditioner, be sure to follow the directions to the letter for best results.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you for your response. I will check the fluid to see how clean it is. I know where the power steering fluid filter is. I think there is an Eric video on power steering fluid replacement.
