I am having a serious problem with my 2003 ford focus it has a zetec se engine, at first the car was losing power for a few seconds while driving the rpm would go all the way down and if I mash the gas pedal at times it would rev back up. It would also cut out when the car comes to a stop in traffic. So I started with replacing the fuel filter but the problem came back after 20 minutes of driving, I was really hoping it would have been a cheap fix but next I took out the gas tank check the strainers and replaced the fuel pump and installed new spark plugs NGK LTR5GP and the car drove with no problems for two days I thought all was well I was so relieved but now a new problem surfaced. I would turn the key and hear the fuel pump kick in for two seconds, start the car it will start normal then it would start to idle rough and die slowly. Someone had suggested that the initial start of the pump would pressurize the lines but after that the pump wont continue working and the car would just use the gas that it can and die out. So what would cause the pump not to work after initial start up? What can I do to solve this problem?

The first thing you need to do is check the fuel pressure with a gauge to verify that your problem is related to fuel pressure. Second, is the check engine light on? it might not be bad enough to set a fault code.

Make sure the throttle body is clean around and behind the throttle plate.

ill try to get the fuel pressure checked and theres no check engine light showing

Fuel pressure key on engine off should be 55psi and the pressure
should not drop. If you have a scanner that reads live data. you can
read fuel pressure. If pressure not seen or drops.replace the pump.

If the fuel pressure is ok i would be looking at a Mass Airflow Sensor problem. I have seen a couple of them go bad on those cars That also would require a scan tool.

I found out there is a recall for fuel pumps and wiring connectors on some of those cars. I don’t know if you qualify. You might contact a Ford dealer with your VIN# in hand. Can’t hurt to check.

hi again got a test done and its shows 44 psi in the beginning start the engine it will go all the way down to 28 psi when it dies out. could this be some sort of computer problem?

I don’t recall if that engine has an idle air bypass (IAC) or not.

If it does, remove it and clean it. Do NOT try to clean the throttle body on the downstream side of the throttle plate.

Cleaning the MAF would not hurt.

i will try those suggestions, but another update is a test was done on the pump alone and it provided psi up to 55. this changes the focus doesnt it?

I shouldn’t even comment cuz i’m not sure but i believe the fuel pump is computer controlled. A few years ago i had one with a bad sensor. I believe the sensor is located on the fuel rail. It has two or three wires connected to it.

                            28 psi is kinda low.

ill look for that sensor and check it out.

so today i took the car to a mechanic to double check for dtc with a more advanced scan tool. after the car wont give codes except p1000 we re did a pressure test started at 40 psi then dropped to 15 then the engine shakes like crazy and dies. also revisit the fuel filter actually by passing it engine still stalls out. tested the electrical flow while the car runs til it dies shows a 12 to 13 volts. blew out the fuel lines with a compressor and noticed alot of fragments came out so the mechanic said that its probably rusting in the lines and that damaged the new fuel pump that i installed. we check the coil pack and wires those passed as well. so the suggested project is to change the fuel lines and install new pump.

How can debris in the fuel line damage a fuel pump when the fuel flow (and therefore the debris flow) is FROM the fuel pump to the engine ?

Is the fuel tank metal? If it is the tank itself
may be rusting. keep us posted on your progress.
