yay.. i finally get to work on my own car banana:

      2003 Ford Crown Vic CVPI 4.6L V8 (W engine) 85,000 miles

got a pretty hard check engine light this morning on the way to school… blinking CEL which eventually went solid. Just pulled the codes and this is what I got:

      PCM

      • P1000 [see attachment from alldata]
      • P0457 replaced gas cap
      • P0306 (i believe this is the culprit)

      VAPS

      • B1318 Low Batt voltage: I run a power inverter w/ lots of accessories, batt load test is good
      • C1445 vehicle speed signal circuit failure – ABS module
      • [li]U1026 SCP data fault for engine RPM…?? (definition not found in alldata)

I believe the cause of the shuddering and subsequent CEL this morning is a result of #6 misfiring. As a quick test, I have already listened to the injectors and they all sound good, thus eliminating the need for any further fuel system diagnostics. I’m about to do a power balance (hopefully without shocking myself) and see if there is a noticible difference. Then I will pull and test the coil and remove the spark plug for inspection.

      Pertinant History:
Just got back from a pretty serious road trip, probably put 1,500 miles on the vehicle over a 3 week period.

1500 miles in 3 weeks is normal for me lol.

I’ve heard that the coil-on-plugs commonly go bad on those engines. Might be a good place to start.

I’m not sure if this link will be accessible to ya’ll, but here is one serious TSB for these coils:

Wow… no resistance data for the coil. No problem, I will compare the resistance of the #6 coil to a neighboring known good working coil. 🙂

          From AllData:

Ford does not provide standalone testing or resistance specifications for this component, the only test provided by Ford for the Ignition Coil is a pinpoint test procedure. For diagnosis and testing of the ignition coil, refer to “Powertrain Management : Computers and Control Systems : Testing and Inspection” See: Computers and Control SystemsTesting and Inspection

          Known Good Resistance (#5 coil)

          Suspect #6 coil

Car ran great after disconnecting #6 coil… gunned it to 3 or 4k rpm and the engine ran relatively smooth. Plugged #6 back up and it was chuggin’.

I’ll start by saying that resistance checks on ignition coils are a waste of time. I get this from people that actually design ignition coils for a living. The reason is that coils fail under load and a coil resistance can check out fine but it can actually be bad when under load. That said I’m also not a fan of ‘listening’ to injectors as this is also not conclusive. It CAN help find a dead injector but so can a power balance. That said I think you did a great job of finding the issue with the faulty coil. Thanks for using the ETCG forum and keeping us up to date.
