I would say switch to regular oil and use the 5W30 that is called for. Synthetic is not required and not recommended for high mileage engines not only because of problems like what you are having but also because it can cause the engine to leak as well as burn oil more rapidly, regular oil is what is called for and regular oil of the correct viscosity is what is best to run.
