I have a 2003 Chrysler Concorde with the 2.7 liter V6. When I picked it up I was told it had problems with over heating, I topped off the ratator up and drove it around LA on and off the high ways for most of the day with no problems of over heating. So I flushed the system to find that I had added 50/50 is a system that was 100% water. So I refilled the system with the required antifreeze ran it until the thremastat opened and added a little more. Then packed up the car to drive it back to Phoenix, AZ where I live, everything was running great until Baumont, CA that’s when we started smelling burnt oil so we pulled off the high way and into a car wash to check it out there was a little oil on the exhaust, so we looked under and that’s when we saw the coolant pouring out from between the motor and the transmission. We shut off the car and it stopped we waited a few hours until it was cooler and started taking the air intake lines off to get a better look at the back of the engine and couldn’t see anything so we jacked the car up and set it on the jack stands I had with me and got under the car to see if we could find a leak. Not seeing anything I turned the car over while my friend was watching to see if more coolant came out. Once the car started the coolant started leaking from where we had pulled the flywheel cover off of, after shuting off the car we got back under there and couldn’t understand why it was leaking that bad from that spot while running but not when it was off. So I was wondering if you knew of any reason it would be leaking and how to fix it. Thank you very much. JD Warner

To be sure where the leak is rent a pressure tester and pressurize the cooling system.
You can rent the tool at usually any auto part store. It sounds like a possible head gasket
or freeze plug. these links will help further.

The car hasn’t overheated even with the leaking coolant it hasn’t overheated or gone above normal temp. I have checked the oil and the valves and there isn’t any evidence of water/coolant in the oil. Could There be no evidence of moisture in the oil even with a blown head gasket? Plus I have found out since I brought the car home that there is a coolant line that runs under the intake to the back of the motor. I believe that it could have burst and that’s the reason it’s leaking. But thank you very much for your advise and I will test the pressure like you have told me to.

Well the coolant line that runs between the heads looked ok but the 3inch rubber hose that runs from that line into a T junction then into the heater core was rotten so changed that and it didn’t leak after putting the motor back together. Well didn’t leak until the test drive and well it’s leaking again and I’m seeing the coolant dripping from the same dang spot. Does anyone know where else the coolant could be leaking from on the back side of the motor?

Ok here is an update on the 03 Concorde, we tried to pressure test the coolant system and well long story short we are pulling the whole top end off to replace and rebuild the gaskets and heads along with the water pump and timing chain if needed. Thank you everyone who helped with their comments and professional experience.

I will. Thank you so much for your help. I posted another automotive question but this time it’s my personal vehicle. The title is AC DIED IN MY CAR. If you could shed a little light on that problem it would be awesome.

Glad you went for the pressure testing, that’s the best way to find coolant leaks. Just be sure you bleed the system of air when you’re done. Videos on both things I mentioned here along with other useful information.

Good luck with the top end rebuild and please keep us updated on your progress.

Thank you Eric. We did the test but it just bled out at 9-11 PSI. I crack the bleeder and nothing came out, but yesterday in the late evening the cars owner came over with a bottle of chemical sealant and added it to the radiator then took it for an hour long drive. When he came back the car wasn’t leaking any more, (I was against the treatment knowing what lay in store if it didn’t work.) and he drove it around for a few more hours after flushing the system out per the instructions on the bottle. Today he stopped by to pick up his other car he left here last night and said that the car was running great no leaks and he was all over the valley with it.
I have a feeling I will see that car again in no time and my job will be twice as hard. God I hate stop leak treatments.

I hate being right. The car has come back to my house leaking just as bad as before. I told him stop leak doesn’t work but noooo he swore that this stuff works like a charm. But today the owner came back by and wanted to pull the intake and replace the gaskets insisting that it could be the source of the coolant leak. Sadly I had to inform him that no coolant runs in the intake on that engine. But we replaced the gaskets and then decided to pull the metal coolant line that runs between the heads and discovered coolant in the valley. We busted out the flashlights and checked the sides of the heads facing the valley and found what looks to be the source of the leak. Once I told him that the heads needed to be pulled and the gaskets changed and that we need to check for any damage with the heads off. He said ok but first let’s try this other stop leak and see if that works, and if it does ill have you do the heads at a later date. Well it didn’t and the car is still leaking.

I have attached a photo but I do have a video but it won’t attach here. Maybe I can attach it on Facebook and tag ETCG so y’all can see the leak.

The picture is to dark. 🙁 Stop leak is not the right way to go. The gasket method is the best way.

Sorry about the picture. It was a screen grab from the video. But yes as I have stated before I HATE stop leak. It does more harm then good. And it seems to never work. But they are picking up a complete gasket kit today so not only are the head gaskets getting replace but also the valve gaskets and any other gaskets on the heads that the kit has.

Well damn. Everything I try to do to share the video with y’all seems to not want to work. Grrrrr. And thank you. I’m not a trained mechanic but I have been busting my knuckles and cutting my hand, legs and arms on cars and trucks from a long time. It’s a passion and it would be great to do it for a living but I have a small problem of charging people for the work I’ve done. Like my friends cousin, she is a single mother and I don’t feel right taking money from a single mom. Don’t think I’m not getting some kind of payment from other auto jobs. I have a neighbor who forces me to take payment for the work I do for her. But I just love working with my hands and with EricTheCarGuy as a great teacher on YouTube I know I have a lot to learn from him as well as y’all. Thank you.
