I have not had this car long and guess what…yea. Tranny issues. Have had it rebuilt and still have issues. I have 12 month warranty on rebuild. Its already been back 3 times to be tweeked. I’m getting ready to take it back in.
When the transmission is cold, 1st will not engage after coming to a stop. It will also slip at higher speed. And if you are idling (at higher speeds) then put your foot down, the transmission says no way bro and does not even engage.
I have been researching forums and have read that there may be a solution for this transmission. An ’06 or ’07 used (low time) 6cyl Accord trans. I am seriously considering this for the hopefully not too near future. I love this car and the Transmission is awesome when it is good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

4th gear IS overdrive in the Acura trans. OK I’ll concede that people are swapping those transmissions out but my question is why? The K series automatic transmissions didn’t have problems like the 6 cylinder versions did. Why would you remove a transmission that isn’t known for problems and replace it with one that is? Secondly, why go through all that trouble to do the ‘replacement’ if all you need to do is replace the one you have? There comes a point with ‘swaps’ like this where you have to look at the situation practically. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

The whole reason I’m considering the swap is the the ’03 tl transmission is famous for turning itself into a paperweight every 30-60,000 miles. There are many people that are on their 3rd and fourth transmission. The ’06 or ’07 accord transmission on the other hand, has resolved those design flaws that the ’99-’03 acura tl had. Swap a notoriously bad transmission with one that has fixed the problem.

Maybe you know something about the ’06 or ’07 accord that I do not, but I know the tl transmission is the only thing terribly wrong with that car. It is great when it works, just does’nt work for long. The accord Transmission, according the the acura forums is supposedly a very reliable tranmission…the ’06-’07 that is.

OK sorry, I misread you. I thought you were going the other way for some reason. If that’s the direction you take keep us posted as I’d love to know if that works or not. Keep in mind that the gear ratios are probably quite different so that may be an issue but I’m not sure.

You don’t have to tell me about how bad those transmissions are. I was replacing up to 3 of them a day at the dealer at one point. Some of those for the second and third time. To be honest, that car was riddled with problems from the moment they showed up at the dealer. For me it gets the vote for worst Honda ever made. They had wheel bearing issues, brake issues, radio issues, seat heater issues, EGR issues, transmission issues, clock light bulb issues, headlight issues….. I could go on but I don’t think that’s helpful to your problem.

I have heard of issues with the V6 transmissions of the later model vehicles having issues all the way up through 2011. These were not as common but they did show up when I did a search on the topic.

            Keep us posted.

90% of all the problems on the newer 5 speed and 6 speed trannies are torque converter related from what I have seen. If you can do the swap and have the cash then go for it!

Thanks all and especially Eric. I’m glad I could finally explain myself well enough that we all agree that my tranny is a POS. Headlight…already changed both. got the CORRECT bulbs on amazon for $90 I think…far cheaper than anyone else wanted. The bun warmers dont work but I live in Texas so I can deal. My wife put 4 cd’s in the stereo and now they wont come out. Amyome have any ideas on that…Right now the only problem with the trans is when it is cold…stalls going into 1st sometimes. I love the car though. Only paid $8k for it with 90k on it and it was in exccellent condition. It is a blast to drive.

I will keep you posted if I decide to do the swap. Thanks for all the help…and seriously, if anyone has any idea how to get those cd’s out let me know.

I have used picks to carefully lift up on the cd changer and remove the cd’s. Its a longshot and may need to be disassembled by an audio shop to remove em.

I believe the radio will need to be removed and
                    disassembled. 🙁

Well I wasn’t going to go here but to be honest all the problems you listed are common to that vehicle. In addition those cars tend to warp rotors often, clock light bulbs burn out constantly, rear view mirrors go bad, wheel bearings are sometimes a problem, the timing belt tensioners go bad and cause the timing to jump, and it goes through struts more than other Hondas. Personally, I hated those cars as for me they spelled the beginning of the end for Honda quality. That said, as for the radio you can get the old CD’s out but it will happen again. After you get the old CD’s out I wouldn’t put anymore back in. I think you’d be much better off with an 05 or newer version of the same car if I’m honest. The most important thing to remember on those is that you need to make sure that you only put Michelins on it. If not they just don’t rid right. Keep us posted.
