Hello Guys!

I own 2003 Accord V6 EX Coupe.
I’m having a vibration and rattle noise when igniting or shutting down the engine. I can hear it better when shutting down though. So, I turn the key, it shuts down while car is sort of shaking and right there is clank-clank-clank-clank. Same story when starting the engine except rattle is shorter and harder to detect due to starter and engine sounds. It DOESN’T appear when running IDLE.
Also I can only hear it from the inside, sounds like it’s coming from the front maybe even middle but certainly not rear, I think I can hear it better when sticking my head under the steering wheel and listening there. I can’t catch the noise at all when listening under the hood. Visually exhaust does’t seem to be shaking. I’ve replaced engine mounts, so that shouldn’t be them.

Here is the link to the video, hopefully you would be able to hear it a little bit. It doesn’t rattle very strong most of the time, but still you can hear it during ignition and shutting off.

Current issues that I have which might somehow relate to this problem are:
1. Transmission is almost dead (It’s my second transmission! Very upset with this car) I don’t remember if I had this rattle before the trany got toasted, or maybe I just didn’t pay attention. However, I think it came after.
2. Left front sub-frame middle mounting rubber is destroyed (see the picture)

3. The steering rack was clanking/knocking from time to time when turning the wheel, I’ve replaced fluid with Honda OEM but haven’t driven enough to tell whether it fixed the problem.

P.S. I think I’ve just noticed that the rattle comes on when turning the steering wheel in certain position, but it’s very random. Not taking it into consideration yet, gotta test it more.

Please help 🙂
I have an idea…Perhaps you could take a floor jack with a block of wood and slightly support the weight of the engine under the oil pan. The idea would be to take some of the weight off the mounts. Again, just a slight amount. See if the sound goes away or diminishes. If so, then you could likely rule out the transmission as being the problem. Hopefully, it’s something simple.
I actually really like the idea with a jack, I could try it out tomorrow but you won’t believe what happened! I desided to go for a short ride so the car won’t just sit there, and all of the sudden all dashbord lights and head lights went very dim, then the battery indicator came up and then a bunch of them (forgot which ones exactly)… This car just falling apart… lol

My suspection is that alternator went bad and since the car was sitting for so long the battery just died… Now I can’t start the car!!! There is a noise of starter when I try to ignite, but it doesn’t start

Lol…well, this stuff seems to come all at once…a week ago, one of my vehicles had to have brake pads and rotors AND the water pump went out the same day… Keep us posted…

Not sure if I should do transmission first or the alternator…

It’s a little unclear what you mean by doing the transmission? You’re probably aware, the alternator can be tested off the car at an automotive parts store like Autozone. I’d have that tested first. The dashboard symptoms mentioned earlier sounds like an alternator, battery or bad electrical connection. Good luck…

Funny, this thread is now way off topic lol 😆 however I promise to post when the noise will be gone.

Anyhow, I just wander if it would be better to install alternator after transmission is replaced. On the other hand I need to get to the shop, where they would replace a trany. So I guess I would have to do alternator first

Fixed an alternator, the noise is still there. I strongly suspect that it has to do with transmission. Going to get it replaced in a week or two.
Once it’s done I will post if the noise would go away.

That’s an expensive trouble shoot route. Hopefully you have an honest transmission repair service. It would stink to go to all that expense and still have the nagging vibration… Keep us posted and good luck.

So I found oil/power steering leak that I had for a long time. It is right behind the power steering pump and it appears to be lighter than engine oil and looks more like power steering fluid which I flushed about a week ago which is now yellowish color compare to brownish engine oil. Yesterday I dumped the hole little bottle of UV dye into the engine and today when I put UV light on that leak it appears green. Could it be true that this is a mix of engine oil and PS fluid? Also whenever engine is hot, it smells like something is melting when I get under the hood. I think that I found that one too, it’s also right behind the PS pump.
Another leak is right at the bottom of the engine where it comes together with transmission, and it looks like oil and also green under UV light. Btw, are they going to replace the gasket between engine and trany during the instalation of a new trany? And where do you guys think the leak behind the steering pump coming from? Any ideas before I dismount the pump?

I suspect failed engine mounts from the noise in the video. Most common mounts to fail on these vehicles at the active mount at the front of the engine compartment, and the mount at the front of the engine itself. Maybe your transmission is not at fault at all and just the mounts are shot. Failed mount can often be misdiagnosed as harsh shifting transmission.

I finaly got my transmission fixed although the ratlle didn’t go away. I notised that I can reproduce it by shifting to the Reverse. Every time when I do that, the car jerks and rattles even stronger that when I ignite/shut down the engine. I don’t even know what to think now… 🙁 In 10 days I will go back to the Transmission shop for a quick check and will talk about this problem, I guess I really do need help of a proffesional.
