      Hello Guys!

      I own 2003 Accord V6 EX Coupe.
I’m having a vibration and rattle noise when igniting or shutting down the engine. I can hear it better when shutting down though. So, I turn the key, it shuts down while car is sort of shaking and right there is clank-clank-clank-clank. Same story when starting the engine except rattle is shorter and harder to detect due to starter and engine sounds. It DOESN’T appear when running IDLE.
Also I can only hear it from the inside, sounds like it’s coming from the front maybe even middle but certainly not rear, I think I can hear it better when sticking my head under the steering wheel and listening there. I can’t catch the noise at all when listening under the hood. Visually exhaust does’t seem to be shaking. I’ve replaced engine mounts, so that shouldn’t be them.

Here is the link to the video, hopefully you would be able to hear it a little bit. It doesn’t rattle very strong most of the time, but still you can hear it during ignition and shutting off.

Current issues that I have which might somehow relate to this problem are:
      1. Transmission is almost dead (It’s my second transmission! Very upset with this car) I don’t remember if I had this rattle before the trany got toasted, or maybe I just didn’t pay attention. However, I think it came after.
      2. Left front sub-frame middle mounting rubber is destroyed (see the picture)

      3. The steering rack was clanking/knocking from time to time when turning the wheel, I’ve replaced fluid with Honda OEM but haven’t driven enough to tell whether it fixed the problem.

P.S. I think I’ve just noticed that the rattle comes on when turning the steering wheel in certain position, but it’s very random. Not taking it into consideration yet, gotta test it more.

      Please help 🙂

I couldn’t really hear anything in the video. Based on your description I’d be checking the heat shielding on the exhaust.

As for the other issues, including the power steering, it may have something to do with the transmission installation. That also goes for the pic you posted of the mount.

That said, those years were notorious for problems with transmissions. I’ve written about it here.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

                Thanks for the reply Eric!
I just watched that video on heat shielding rattles yesterday 😆 I will be checking it tomorrow for sure!

True, my video doesn’t really catch all those noises. But, let me explain it more clearly.
When I start/shut down the engine very first time on the video, that’s when you should be able to hear it the best! Only when it ignites, the noise occuring in unison with the engine and when I shut it down, the noise comes right after. It’s like something wiggling or wobbling or shaking and hitting something else in the process. Also, the car vibrates really hard at the same time. English isn’t my first language, so I can’t explain it better :(. Maybe that noise isn’t “rattle” at all, and you deffinetly know better what to call it as a native English speaker 😉 But, you should 100% be able to hear that noise when I start/shut down very first time.

I bought this car 2 years ago for almost $9000 with 105k miles on it. Probably the dealer was selebrating this event not less than a week . After a first year of driving in addition to many revealed problems, my first trany died. (After that I desided to educate my self about cars and become DIYer.)
I discovered that the new(used) transmission together with the rack were installed at the same time by the same people and now both are causing problems although I didn’t even have the rack problems back then. So after the current trany got toasted about a week ago, I went to their shop and asked them what the heck? They said that the warranty for the tranny expired 2 month ago, so I could’t get them to fix anything for free. So is there any way of prooving that they did a bad job and at least get a trany rebuild? I suspect that they didn’t even use OEM Honda fluids when did the repair in the first place… In my understanding the parts like rack (not even mentioning trany) shouldn’t be braking after 12.5k miles

P.S. Thanks for what you do Eric, I learn a lot from you! Keep it up! banana:

Those transmissions have known issues and have been prone to fail even after a rebuild. I wrote about it extensively in the article I linked for you. It would be very difficult to prove that it was their installation that caused the problem. That said, the transmission may be the cause of your noise and vibration. If you have a bad transmission it can cause those problems.

You’re probably right about trasmission being the cause of this noise. I don’t think I had it before the trany went bad + I checked the heat shields and it doesn’t seem to be the problem. I guess I will be just saving money for the trany and after it gets fixed I will see if the noise went away. One friend of mine knows people from “Cincinnati Transmission”, they can put a new(used) one in for $1900 + 50k miles 3 year warranty. It looks like an amazing deal compare to $3700 and 1 year warranty which I got last time…

Also I’m thinking about replacing the trany mounts at the same time just to make sure that everything nice and tight. What’s your advice about that?

It sounds to me like something metal is touching the body or sub frame. When starting and shutting down the engine normally vibrates. Could even be the exhaust system touching the floor etc. under the car. It could well be the engine or transmission mounts.

Maybe get a helper to start and shut down while you inspect under the car.

You’ve received some great advice from Eric, Wysetech and College Man already. One other consideration….worn engine mounts? If mounts are badly worn, it might show up right at start up/ shut down when had engine rocks back and forth. Sounds like a metal to metal type vibration to me.

It vibrates waaaaay too much like the car is shaking… I’m now thinking twords transmission. Probably some rotational part is out of ballance or something similar to that…
Also, I honestly don’t know where transmission mounts are located, probably should check them as well. The engine mounts are in good shape though. Exhaust seems ok too.
As I said, I certainly should first deal with the trany. It might exactly be the sourse of noise problem. 🙂

I had 2 bad engine mounts, it felt like engine moves separetly from the body 😆 and it was clancking badly when I was taking off from dead stop. I replaced rear and side engine mounts and problem was solved, the front one looked good to me and untill now I had no issues with it. However, as I said earlier, the transmission mounts could be worn, but I have to find their location first 🙂

It appears the rear engine mount also serves as the transmission mount. Best of luck…

I have an idea…Perhaps you could take a floor jack with a block of wood and slightly support the weight of the engine under the oil pan. The idea would be to take some of the weight off the mounts. Again, just a slight amount. See if the sound goes away or diminishes. If so, then you could likely rule out the transmission as being the problem. Hopefully, it’s something simple.

In my honda, had rattle, and found it to be a loose spring bolt where the downpipe from the engine meets exhaust. The down pipe rusted at that bolt/exhaust connection.
