My ford windstar has an electical issue that is very annoying. when i dive it at night the interior likes will come on and then shut off. not sure where to start on finding the issue. I plan on taking out the switch out and cleaning the contacts to see if that would be the problem but if that doesn’t work not sure where to start after that.

check that all the doors are indeed closed. Then check all
the door switches. When the lights come on due they dim out
or just go off? In the gauge cluster do you get a door light
        or indicator of some sort?

Agreed, first thing I would be suspicious of is a door switch. Either the switch is messed up, or one of the doors isn’t closing all the way, or the switch is somehow not properly adjusted so it isn’t being fully depressed when the door is closed.

Most likely the switch plunger is a bit worn and is not pushing down far enough. Put a piece or five of tape on the door jamb where the plunger hits.

Also if the vehicle has ever been in a crunch-type accident, it may not have been straightened out perfectly. Use tape in this case too. Or see if the door latch has some adjustment room, most do.

Thanks I will check that out. the van does have 335000 miles on it so Im sure that could be the problem.

I also always get the car facts report. and the van was clean of accidents.

Vans like yours have this problem quite often. The most common areas to check are the sliding door contacts and the rear lift gate switch. I have also seen the front door switches cause this problem. Usually the red warning lights are on in the cluster to give you a clue where to look, e.g. rear lift gate light warning.

I have an 03 windstar it was doing the same thing–I sprayed every door–side door and back door with wd 40 also wipe off excess wd 40–this worked for me because mine were dirty. Sometimes it could be a bad door switch and I’ve been told they have door sensors. PS I sprayed all the door latches is what I was refering to above. If its not fixed already I hope this helps. ++1 I’d be checking the door switches as well.
