I’ve been talking with a guy who’s selling an 02 Silverado but says it needs a new oil pump. Currently truck will not start. Would this raise a red flag to you if you were buying? How expensive or difficult is it to replace an oil pump. Thanks in advance.

I would be asking the guy how does he know the oil pump needs to be replaced, what were the symptoms, was the motor run with no oil pressure. A failed oil pump would not generally cause a no-start. Why doesn’t it start? Does it need a battery? Starter? Cranks but doesn’t run? What were the symptoms before it quit starting? Based on the answers given would determine how to proceed, but unless you feel like doing major detective work, troubleshooting, and repair on this truck, you might be better off walking away.

If it does need an oil pump, and again based on the answers to the above questions followed by proper troubleshooting it may not need an oil pump, they are not terribly expensive, and on 2WD fairly easy to replace (4WD are a little harder), but of course ease and expense are subjective.

This entire thing sounds fishy to me.

The other guy, after all, is selling the truck. Why? If the truck is any good to begin with, you’d think he’d repair it himself and continue driving it. The need for an oil pump could be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to hidden problems.
