      Hello,

I recently bought a 2002 Saturn SC1 (3 door) with 76,000 miles on it. Before I bought it I had it checked over by a technician and everything appeared to be great. About two weeks after I bought the car I noticed when shifting into reverse from drive there is a delay and then a hard slam when the reverse gear kicks in. A few days ago I was parked on a slight decline and when I put it into reverse the car started to roll like it was in neutral. I gave it a little gas the gear then engaged as the revs went up and I got the reverse slam again, but this time it was shifted from park to reverse. I read, that this may be caused by the valve body being dirty. What do you think?

      Thanks,
      Joel

It could be caused by the valve body being dirty. It would be useful to determine if it’s specifically the engine RPM increase(pressure of trans fluid) or waiting the time of the delayed engagement (trans fluid volume) that gets it to engage. A delayed engagement of a gear means that it takes too long for the pressurized ATF to fill a chamber before forcing a piston against a set of clutches. This can happen because of a dirty valve body not allowing a spool valve to move freely and allow ATF to flow openly where it’s supposed to. The other reason it can take too long for said chamber to fill up is if a internal seal along the way is leaking and allowing a portion of the intended fluid to leak to another part of the transmission.

I hope that isn’t too hard to follow, but there is no simple way to explain the actual working of an automatic trans. It is also likely that unless your symptom is a known problem that can be explained with Google searches, it is beyond internet diagnosis. I’ll answer whatever questions I can, but I’d be surprised if it will end up being a DIY/over-the-internet fix.

Sorry for replying so late. I a tech cheak it over and he said it’s be a lot of work to figure out what the problem is.
I didn’t pay a lot for the car so I’m just letting it go and going to deal with it.

Confirm you have the proper fluid level first and foremost. If the fluid is dirty, changing it shouldn’t hurt anything and Saturn’s have the cool screw on trans filter.

The TAAT trans is noted for a nut coming loose on the rev drum. Easy to get to while in the car.
