I don’t have an exact answer. The problem with Honda transmissions is that they tend to plug with friction material. A major part of the problem is no pan where this stuff can settle out. Anything that can keep friction material out of the transmission will extend its life.

Actually the filter is a internal part of the transmission so a lot of people tell you that it is not replaceable. But I have seen some people on another forum replace them. In fact I was going to replace mine on my 03 Accord but decided not to because you have to take off this plate that houses the ATF filter and to me it difficult to get to so didn’t go though with it. But you can if you want to I don’t see any harm it could cause. It might be better to change it if you can because I know the ATF filter gets clogged with metal shavings and dirt. Also there’s not really a Interval for it cause Honda say’s it will last the life of the Transmission which I doubt that.

Once the filter plugs the transmission will quit working or at least not let you drive very far, so in that sense Honda is correct in saying for the life of the transmission. For one of Honda’s transmissions, the one for the Civic, they have a revised filter twice the size of the original.

            Hi NightHawk92,
The ’02 Odyssey actually has both the internal and the external filters on these trans. The internal filter can be accessed during a full teardown of the trans, whereas, the external filter is right in front of the filler plug near the ABS wiring harness. Odd to see this and only know it to be on the ’02 Odyssey so far.

This is not entirely true. The high failure rate of some Honda transmissions is actually caused by insufficient cooling of the second gear assembly. Honda had us taking pictures of them before the failures started. After that, the had us installing an oil jet kit to try and keep the assembly cool. In fact, I think that’s what the original poster is talking about as I’m not familiar with a ‘filter bypass’ that Honda used.

That said, Honda automatic transmission filters are internal and are not serviceable. On some models after a reman transmission was installed, they had us install external filters in the cooler lines.

If you don’t have one of those, it’s not replaceable. If you do have one of those, there is no interval that I’m aware of. 60K seems like a good number though. Personally, I’m going to leave mine in and replace my transmission fluid with Honda fluid every 30K and not worry about it.
