My son and I replaced the axles on his 2002 Accent (Auto Trans). The right side was easy to put a pry bar between the axle and the trans housing and pop the axle free.

The left side of the trans housing has a flange surrounding the axle that makes it impossible to get a pry bar in place, and that makes it enormously difficult to remove the axle.

Anyway, we managed to get the left out and replaced it, but it was really ugly. We ended up breaking off the axle, put a big vice grips in the inner CV joint canister, tied a rope to the vice grips to get better leverage and pulled like H*ll.

But the axle is leaking trans fluid so I assume the seal was damaged or not seated right, and we need to replace it. Does anyone know the RIGHT way to get that left axle out? We don’t want to damage the new axle trying to remove it.

See if this helps. I did see a flange of a sort, but he bypassed it from behind. I think, it’s matter of finding the right approach angle.

Thank you for taking the time to find and post the video. Unfortunately the Sonata and Accent are not the same. The accent has a flange about half an inch deep surrounding the base of the inner CV joint canister, and we can think of no pry tool we can fit into it.

Last night I bought a locking oil filter wrench which is like a vice grips with wider jaws. It will fit over the canister and hopefully grip tight enough and be strong enough that we can take a hammer and block of wood and smack it from behind to dislodge the axle.

These are a pain in the rear…when no pry angle is doable I use my auto body sliding dent repair hammer to remove em by hooking it to the axle and pounding on it in reverse…however it always destroys the axle in the process but who cares if it has to be removed anyhow…otherwise I have also just grabbed the end of the axle and pulled and yanked untill my arms felt like they were comming outta there sockets and just as u think u cant take it anymore it usually gives way. Also, sometimes requires 2 people too…one to pry with whatever force they can where the axle goes into the trans from under the car and the other to pull and yank on the axle from the side of the car…usually the force from both is enought to dislodge it!

These cars suck for taking out the axles but just requres elbow grease as they say. keep looking for something u can get in there to pry with and put ur back into it! FYI…I have even used ball joint spreaders to achomplish this but gotta be careful not to crack the transmission casing!

            Good Luck

              Thanks.
As it happened, the $8 Harbor Freight Locking Oil Filter Wrench (http://www.harborfreight.com/locking-oil-filter-wrench-66570.html) did the trick. It clamped on to the canister and my son whacked it from behind and the axle popped loose with no damage. He reset the seal and it is working fine now.
