UPDATE: The pulley isn’t seized, but is broken off of the whole assembly and wobbles which is why the belt broke off. It might be because of a seized bearing but I can’t get the pulley off without taking apart the whole front end so I will have to check later.

I have a 2002 Honda CRV with 170,000 and change, and today it started smoking with the company of a horrible tapping sound. Pulled over and saw the belt tentioner shaking like crazy, and then the serpentine belt came off the pulley and snapped in half.

A few hundred miles ago the AC compressor went bad, it spun fine but according to the guys over at Pep Boys they got a low reading on the high side and a high reading on the low side of the system. I have no problem driving with the windows down so I decided to not get it fixed because of the high cost and the fact that the compressor was spinning fine so it wasn’t going to do any harm.

Now that the belt is snapped I think the compressor is most likely not spinning so fine, I am guessing the pulley bearing has seized? It is too late to get it looked at today but I was wondering if anyone thinks that this is possible, that the bearing seized that caused the tentioner to shake and then snapped the belt.

      Thanks,
      Hasan

Very likely. Go out and spin just the bearing assembly and see if it spins freely. If it does then that is not likely the culprit. I bet that it will not spin freely. It may spin by hand with a grinding sound or not be smooth. When it gets hot it may lock up. If you dont want to spend the money on a new AC then see if there is an Alt belt routing option that leaves the AC out. I know my older Truck had this option as you could buy the truck without AC. Don’t know if yours has that option.

If a pulley wobbles it will throw the belt. Fix the pulley and fix the belt problem.

Also if there is not an alternate belt routing you might try and see if there is a compressor delete option. basically a bracket that bolts where the compressor goes and has the same size pulley attached to it. Or you could try to source a compressor at a salvage yard that is cheap, but still spins well enough. I would also check the tensioner pulley because as you said it was wobbling, which isn’t normal even if the compressor bearing went bad or fell off.

This $30 part could bypass the AC compressor, If it were me and I did not want to fix the AC I would just go this route.

As suggested you can bypass it with a different drive belt. It may not be the compressor however. It may just be the compressor clutch.

If it is, then I would just replace that. More info on AC work here.

Good luck and keep us posted.
