Hi guys, I hope you’re all well.

I came back from fishing this weekend and went to put the gear away and my friends civic boot lid (hatch lid) wouldn’t open. He only ever uses his key to manually lock / open the doors as he left his key fob in his trousers and ran it through the washing machine (lol).

We did get the boot lid open eventually but it was by pure chance as we had been playing with the key til it opened.

So he reckons that when you lock your drivers door you turn it once to lock and then again to dead bolt it. Is this correct? He also says that to open the boot there’s a special procedure like turning the key twice to open it as you need to release the dead bolt and then unlock the latch mechanism. Is this correct?

And if someone could tell me the correct key turn sequence to open the boot lid that would be great.

      Thanks in advance

A mechanical lock cylinder should lock/unlock with one turn of the key when the key is inserted in that particular cylinder.

The two-turn thing is a convenience feature on some vehicles equipped with power locks. The first turn mechanically locks/unlocks that particular cylinder with the key, the second turn electrically locks/unlocks the other cylinders remotely.

Some cars have a “valet” feature in the trunk/hatch lock cylinder, and come with a second valet key which allows a parking attendant to open the doors and use the ignition, but keeps him from opening the trunk. Some of these valet lock-out features are engaged by using the key to rotate the rear cylinder 180 degrees in the opposite direction of normal rotation, which disables the interior cable-operated remote hatch/trunk release mechanism.

It’s possible your friend was confusing the extra key turns with the valet lock-out feature or remote locking/unlocking. Vehicle door latches don’t have deadbolts. Having said that, things can get weird when lock cylinders and keys become worn, and don’t always respond to the first turn of the key.

The owners manual will explain exactly how the locking system on this vehicle operates.
