A friend of mine has a 2002 Honda Civic and the dash lights do not come on when the headlights are on. I was just wondering if there is a common problem with this generation of civics, I would prefer not to replace the cluster if I didn’t have to.

First, remove the instrument cluster and locate the Red wire in the Blue connector. With the lights on back-probe and ground the Red wire, the dash light should light up bright. If the dash lights work, verify that the Red/Black wire in the same connector has battery voltage, with the lights on, and that the Black wire has a good ground. If all tests are OK, it is the function of the CPU in the cluster to vary the ground on the Red wire so the dash light would operate.
Find out if an aftermarket stereo has been installed. The CPU might have gotten damaged during installation.

            Hi 6speeddakota,

Does this vehicle have a dimmer switch at all for the dash? If it does, is the dimmer switch turned to the “off” setting, thus not illuminating the dash? Keep us posted.

              Quoted From BigC:

This is EXACTALLY where I was going to go with it.

the dimmer works, the gear indicator and the radio lights dim but the , gauge lights just don’t work. Also has factory stereo

Its probably time to find some wiring diagrams. Are the bulbs also replaceable in that cluster?

I already posted the flow of diagnostics to pin point the issue above.

                    Here they are again:

First, remove the instrument cluster and locate the Red wire in the Blue connector.

With the lights on back-probe and ground the Red wire, the dash light should light up bright. (that will simply do a bulb check)

If the dash lights work, verify that the Red/Black wire in the same connector has battery voltage, with the lights on, and that the Black wire has a good ground.

If all tests are OK, it is the function of the CPU in the cluster to vary the ground on the Red wire so the dash light would operate.

6speeddakota – You might want to take the liberty and follow Jacob’s line of testing seeing as he has posted the same info twice in essence of trying to help you C8-)

Come to think of it along with Jacob’s suggestion I was sent this video some time ago that MIGHT apply to your situation.

I actually posted this before the car was in my posession, the kid who owns it had just bought it and it wasn’t very well taken care of because all of the lights were actually burned out, I replaced them and they are working just fine, thanks a ton from everyone who contributed, I really appreciate the input

Wow that’s not common, I would think you would at least have one or 2 that would work but thanks for the update.

What do you mean by “back-probe”?…. my cpu has went out … I don’t want to pay 100.00 for a replacement if I can just jump a wire…
