While replacing the timing belts (using Eric’s video as a guide), i experienced a mystery when i removed the timing cover. It appears that one of the belts has worn thru the plastic timing cover (photo attached). Is there a clear-cut reason why this has happened? Thanks for any advice.

looks like the lower cover.either the the balancer is not on
all the way or is wobbling. The cover itself may be warped.
was the cover put on tight.

It wasn’t the timing belt that did that, it was the harmonic balancer. I’ve seen this quite often actually. I speculate the cause to be one of 2 things. The first would be that it was not installed correctly by the last person that was in there. The second cause is that the cover will warp when exposed to oil contamination due to a leaking cam seal.
