Hi there. I have a 2002 Ford Focus ZX3. It seems to be making sort of a knocking sound when at idle (750 – 1100 RPM). It sounds like a hammer on plastic. When running above idle it runs just fine. I am thinking that since the fuel injectors have never been cleaned, that could be a good place to start. Other than that, I am clueless to what could be going on. :silly:

Should you have GDI engine, with direct injection, yes, injectors are normally VERY loud. Still it’s not the noise described. More of a clicking noise. And it does not really go away with higher RPM, only frequency changes.
Metal on plastic will be more of a plastic belt tensioner clapping inside the timing belt housing, to me. Some have plastic guides for the belt.
Can you pin point where the noise is coming from?With the good propped open, the noise comes fromthe top of the engine. That is where it is most prominent.
OK. So it’s not from the engine front, where belts are.
Have a stick? Place thumb on one end, grab stick, place that thumb against your ear, and use the opposite stick end as a stethoscope to pin point location even better.
Or, use a piece of a hose, like a garden hose, directly to your ear, for same purpose.
If it’s engine top, where valve cover is, it’s likely rockers noise. 2002? You are at what, 140 000 miles or so? Maybe it’s time for lifters job?
