Hi, a friend of mine has a 2002 Ford Escort 2.0 auto that won’t start, it has 126,000 miles roughly, it does crank over, she said she was going some where and it stalled, couldn’t really get much of any info other than that out of her. I can hear the fuel pump cycling when the key is turned on. I thought that because it stalled it could possibly be with the fuel system so i replaced the fuel filter because of it being older, which it needed anyway so no harm done. That didn’t work, now I’m wondering what I should do next, I am currently at school, and only have a basic tool set which makes things difficult. I plan on checking if there is spark next time I get out there, if there is, what is the next step, is there any way to spray a little gas in the intake to see if it fires? Being on a college budget makes things a little difficult.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

First you need to make shure you have the tree basic elements
1. Air
2. Fuel
3. SparkSince you don’t have fuel pump sound make shure the pump is working. Since you already change the fuel filter you can go their again disconect one side and put ths switch on the ON psition just before chrank (But don’t chrank) and see if fuel comes out of the line. if no fuel comes out you culd have a problem with the fuel pomp.
But this does’t mean that the pomp is bad you need to check that the pomp is receven voltage in order to work yu may check the relay for the pomp an see if it is wirking you could also check fuses to see if any is blown.
Check that the fuel is present and let me know.

If you suspect a timing belt issue, you could try cranking the vehicle without the oil filler cap on and see if you can see the cam shaft turning.
I would be checking for spark with a correct spark tester, then onto fuel and so forth.
Any CEL codes?
We got it running, the battery terminals were corroded pretty bad, got those cleaned up, checked for spark, which it had, tried starting it, it fired but stalled right away, we squirted a little gas in the throttle body, tried again and it fired up and ran fine, shut it down a few times and it starts right up. But that has me thinking the fuel pump is on its way out. Any thoughts?

You may have flooded the engine.
Starting the vehicle in a clear flood mode (accelerator pedal depressed at least 80%) would be something i would try next time.
As for the fuel pump failing, you need evidence to back that statement up. You would need to see how many amps the pump is pulling. Also using a lab scope to see the fuel pumps motor oscillation’s would be very handy to have.
Yea it could have been flooded but wouldn’t sitting 24 hours help, and the spark plug was dry when we took it out after trying today. As for the fuel pump, its just a thought, I don’t really have the tools here at school to do much testing, but if it does it again I believe I can rent tools at a auto store. I don’t like wasting money on the wrong parts and especially don’t want to waste her money thats why I’m waiting to see if it happens again.
