Hello im new here but have watched alot of vids there always extreamly efective ..

Well i have a 2002 dodge dakota with a automatic trans 3.9 magnum

Yesterday i got snowed in and had to engage the four wheel drive (electronic) it went into gear fine , and off i went i droove about 6 miles in 4 hi. Then i heard the grinding like there was a stone in between the caliper and rotor, so i pulled ove. The grinding was pretty loud comeing from what sounded like the right front area. So i stopped and disengaged the four wheel drive and started driveing. But the noise was still there it was louder at lower speeds And more frequent. But around 55-60 the noise diminished slightly. But still a grinding noise none the less . Any suggestions ? Would be very helpful . Im not sure if this is the right place for this question. But i have to ask.

      Ohhh

I checked both half shafts and the two things that i discovered when i got it to work and put it on the lift, i started to take a reading on the front drive train components. I first saw that the drivers side shaft outer boot was off the band must have let go so it was off . The second thing i notice was. Still on the drivers side shaft was there was play on the inner part of the Shaft Enought movement to double check and its w wiggler so i checked the other side And the inner does wiggle Wiggle meaning. Excessive movement. Any help would be great.

My thought would be the differential bearing or something along those lines

When its on the lift start the truck and engage 4 high to
try and replicate the problem. You will need two people for
        this.

I have a 99′ Dodge Ram thats had similar issues, bout all I can do is give you some things to check…Had a snap ring break inside my transfer case after using 4-wheel drive, the noise sounded like it was coming from the front end…also had the pinion bearings go out in the rear end…its really hard to say whats going on with yours…

Well im going to go to the u pull it and get a axle assembly for 100$ With everything i need so ill just freshen the new one with new seals and bearings hope that solves the problem. If not it will be time for a can of gas and a road flare lol

Did you pull the boot back and look inside the joint? There is a possibility the joint is so badly degraded the joint is slipping and making that racket.

If you have no hub lockers, that front shaft spins no matter what whenever the wheel spins.

+1 on it possibly being the joint without the boot that’s bad. One trick for finding noises in 4WD vehicles is to remove the front or rear drive shaft and recheck for the problem. If it goes away when you remove the front or rear shaft, you know where to continue your search.

                Keep us posted.
