Are the bearings in the electric fans going out?

I had a squealing noise on my 1990 caravan one time. I couldn’t tell where it was coming from. I stopped at the local parts store and picked up an alternator, PS pump, water pump, A/C compressor. Everything that was driven by that single serpentine belt. I got to within about a mile of home and I heard a loud noise and the squeal went away. I’d lost the power steering, so I knew the belt had snapped and I had nothing working that the belt powers so I just got over to the side of the road and coasted as far as I could in neutral with the engine off. I managed to get home after a couple more coasting sessions to get that last 3/4 mile.
When I got home I found that everything except the water pump would spin freely. Water pump bearing had seized and was responsible for the belt breaking. Fortune had smiled upon me. I had the part I needed in the front seat so I put it on along with a new belt and the squealing was gone. A $25 water pump was all I needed so everything else was returned to the parts store.
Moral of the story is that a bearing in any component being driven by that belt could be causing the problem.
