My 02 Blazer won’t start. I put the key in, turn it to “on”, and the dash lights up, the headlights come on, and even the radio works. (I’ve replaced the battery, starter, and even the alternator). I know the alternator wasn’t part of this, but it was only reading an 11.4 volt output. So, it was shot. The battery wasn’t much better, only reading 12.04.

Anyways, back on topic. When I turn the key to “start”, EVERYTHING shuts off. The entire vehicle goes to black, and nothing else happens, EXCEPT (as I learned in one of ETCG’s videos) a relay up under the glove box keeps trying to make a connection. Continually. It just keeps clicking, and clicking, and clicking…….you get the idea. They only way to get it to stop clicking is to either step on the brake, or take the key out of the ignition completely. I’m going to try and dig in to the relay issues this morning, (if I can find them. Someone suggested that there are some under the hood I need to find also.)

I’m pretty much a novice at this, so finding where they are isn’t going to be easy. I can’t find a diagram that I understand to help with that. I’m also looking in to the possibility that it could be the ignition switch itself, but logically, if that switch is shot, would a relay be trying to make a connection if it didn’t get a signal to do so from somewhere (i.e. the ignition switch)? IDK…..

Was this problem happening before you replaced the battery and starter? It really sounds like it’s as simple as you didn’t get a cable fastener tight enough at the starter or the battery. If you can say that the problem started after replacing either, start by rechecking those cable connections. I know that the 4×4 Blazers are tough to get the cables screwed down tight so I’d check the starter first.

Yes this issue was happening before I replaced the battery or starter. I’ve done both of those replacements since this past Tuesday, when the issue started. I had left for work, and gotten about a mile and a half down the road, and stopped for gas. After I put the gas in, and tried to leave, it wouldn’t start. Had it towed home, and it’s been sitting here ever since.

Nothing I’ve done so far (new battery, starter/solenoid, cleaned cables) has made any difference in what happens when I turn the key first to “on”, and then to “start”. There is NO turning over and NO sound like the starter ever even gets any signal at all. There is no “clicking” sound out of the engine compartment at all to indicate anything is happening.

The ONLY thing that does happen as the key is turned to the start position is INSTANTLY everything goes black, and what I’m guessing is a relay in or near the glove box (I haven’t looked yet, because I’ve just learned late last night, and in to this morning that they exist, and might be an issue), is trying to make a connection, and keeps clicking. The only way to get it to stop it, is to apply the brake, or take the key completely out of the ignition. If I leave the key in the ignition in any position, this relay keeps clicking.

That is where it’s at this morning. 🙁

I just had a friend tell me they had a blazer, and the same issue. Their fix was that it had “a tricky ignition module. It wears out; cheap plastic. Easy to get at when you take shroud off around the steering wheel. It is an anti-theft deterrent that wears out”. This is a pic of what I found on Google Image for it, but I’m not certain. Can anyone confirm if this is actually it?
