Hey, So i have been looking a used car to buy for under 4k that has lots of nice stuff in it. So far I like the 2001 volvo s60 but the MPG sucks but it looks super clean and nice and has lots of nice accessories.120k miles. But I do want to get a car with good MPG but Honda civic’s (couple) are over priced cars with very little accessories and high miles 140K+. Whats the best car to get ? I just can’t think that a Civic with close to 150k miles would last me a few 2 or 3 years in the City.

I’d bet on a Toyota Camry any ol’ day of the week. They aren’t cheap, but they are plentiful and that tends to keep prices in check. A Subaru wagon would be another good choice. I think they’re kind of funky and take some getting use to. I wouldn’t recommend Volvo simply because parts & service tend to be scarce. They’re tough for sure, but the dash is guaranteed to crack (along with other interior plastics)

A little more description of what features you’re looking for would be helpful. What size and style car are you looking for? What kind of driving will you be doing? In addition to makes already mentioned, throw Hyundai, Kia and Ford Focus into the mix.

Well I am mostly looking for a nice looking car with lots of features such as Nice radio system / ABS / Great Safety rating / Build of the car> ( no cheap cast iron rimes and cheap buttons and plastic every where ) . I am mostly looking for any mid size car but a SUV is super hard to find with good MPG only thing i was able to buy would be a ford escape 01.(i am 6’1) I will mostly be driving in City streets and highway as a mix. I don’t really want old ford or hyundai or kia. I tend to see newer cheap cars such as a 2005 Hyundai vs a 2001 Honda or Toyota. My problem is that Honda’s and Toyotas are SOOO over priced for what they are most of them are over 130-140k miles. I saw that the Volvo S60 has all i need but has bad MPG and needs premium fuel which now is a big deal breaker due to the price of gas.I have my eye on a 2004-2005 Chevy Malibu 4 cly they meet every thing i need and are cheap and fairly well built. My mother once had a 05 Chevy Malibu maxx and that was a beast of a car still runs after 4 hard accidents front , right side , back end and a few small once. It was able to recover from a Chevy Astro van speeding over 40mph on a rainy day slamming into us as we were backing up. But i would like to hear what cars would you recommend for me .

            My top 3 picks are
04 -Chevy Malibu (new body build) 4cly > hard to find
03-04 Saturn ion 4cly sedan has most things i need and is fairly good ratting.
            01 Volvo S60 has every thing i need but down side–(v6 Tubro + perimum fuel $$ <

In addition to your picks and others suggested, I’ll add 88-96 BMW 525i or 535i. The chassis designation is E34 and your can see description on Wikipedia:

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_5_Series

You’d be impressed by this car. It has decent power, good brakes, excellent handling and is roomy. BMW made a lot of these, and this chassis design is before they started loading them up with electronics. They’re fairly simple to work on if you’re a DIYer.

Both the 525i and 535i have six cylinder engines, with 525i far more prevalent. Avoid the V8 engine cars, 530i and 540i. If you live in road salt country it may be difficult to find one in decent shape. If you find one in good condition and drive it, I think you’ll find it game over.

I would take a Toyota Camry with 140k over all the cars you mentioned including the Volvo. They ride well, for most people they are comfortable, both 4 cyl. and V6 are decent on fuel and if you take care of them they will last for years with little repair. If you do have to repair the price of parts and labor are much lower than the Volvo.

                Just my opinion..

Well thanks guys for your opinion I’ll have to see what I can find on Craigslist I am taking the Camry into my hunt and i may get lucky to find one with a ok amount of miles. But if i don’t happen to find one I’ll just settle for a 05 Chevy Malibu (new body) or a 05 Saturn ion sedan. The Saturn Ion is a every easy to find with under a 100k Miles and some posts show them up to 160kmiles and one post with 190K miles for a Saturn hah.
