Is it necessary to remove the master cylinder in order to replace the power brake booster in a 2001 Sunfire or Cavalier? There just doesn’t seem to be like there’s enough room to maneuver the booster out.

Assuming the master cylinder can stay in, how much stress/force can I apply to the brake lines when moving them out of the way?

And then on the other side of things, if the master cylinder does need to be removed and the lines & holes immediately plugged; what are the chances of air getting into the lines upon reconnecting them?

The Haynes manual is pretty wishy washy about if it can be done, simply saying ‘move the master forward and pull the booster out; but if there’s any strain on the lines remove the master cylinder’.

      Thanks!

I have never replaced one on your particular model.

However, you would just need to see and feel how much play the brake lines will endure. Trail and error. Or you could purchase a FSM and see if there is any additional info there.

If you do disconnect all the brakes lines, you may need to bench bleed the master and then again bleed the whole braking system.

On some older vehicles if not replacing the master cylinder and booster as a unit, you would need to check with a feeler gauge the gap between the brake push rod and the master cylinder itself.

I would just disconnect the master lines and pull it
all out.not worth bending or kinking the lines.only
use a line wrench on the fittings.other wise it will
turn into a bad day. bleed the brakes when done. 😉

I would ‘try’ and move the master cylinder out of the way with the brake lines still connected as that will save you bleeding the master cylinder later. However if the booster is bad because of a master cylinder leak into it this would be a waste of time because you’d need to replace the master cylinder anyway. If you remove the lines from the master cylinder you will need to bleed the system. This video is on a different vehicle but the procedure is the same.
