      Hello, I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire 2.4l with a manual transmission.
it has 146k km on it, yes km I’m up in Canada which works out to roughly 90k miles.

when the vehicle is in gear I can faintly hear a ticking noise from the left side of the car that is noticeable when driving, however if I put it in neutral or press in the clutch I don’t hear the noise.

I roughly hear the noise between 2k – 3k rpm as I’m mostly in that range but can sometimes hear it lower.

any suggestions as to what I can look at or what it might be, I changed the fluid as the previous owner didn’t and that didn’t make a difference.

      Thanks

Could be a small exhaust leak your hearing.

if that was the case, wouldn’t I be hearing that regardless of if the was in gear or not at that rpm?

An engine under load changes the resonanse/frequency of the exhaust. A fart can is a good example. My truck ran quiet as can be, even revving it in park. Goto drive it and you heard ticking. Eventually, ticking got louder and louder and is no longer a tick.
