My daughter has a grand am and she brought to my attention that the overfill cap on the antifreeze has a creme ring on it. Thinking it has a antifreeze leak but unsure. We have not added any antifreeze to the system since we put a new thermostat in it quiet some time ago. What do you guys think?
      Its the V6 3.4 litre

      Thanks

Hard to say without seeing it. Those cars are known for the bad intake gasket issues. Watch for antifreeze in oil.

Would it be safe to say that it would be the intake gasket as stated. Would your order the parts to replace or wait to see if antifreeze is in the oil. As of today there is no sign of antifreeze in the oil.

Most of the time, the engine oil will go to rad due to pressure difference of oil and coolant. As far as replacing intake gasket, that is up to you. If there is minimal in the coolant, alot of people just drive it. I dont know that is what your problem is however I know about every 3.1 or 3.8, i have seen has that problem. I changed mine and it took about 7 hours due to engine congestion.

The 3.1,3.4 and 3.8 liter GM engines all suffer from lower intake gasket problems.
If there is a slow loss of coolant but no leaks, that is one early symptom.
Creamy goo on the underside of the oil cap is another sign.
If the LIM gaskets are original, better to replace them before long.
If oil gets contaminated with coolant, it forms acids which destroy the bearings–ruining the engine.
