I am having a problem with my 2001 Mercury Sable. A few times, over the past month, the car has idled very poorly at start-up but then, as soon, as I gave it a little gas, it was fine. It has been fine recently, but this morning, it again idled roughly at start-up and the Check Engine light came on. I drove to my local auto parts store to get the codes read. It came back P0301, Cyl #1 Misfire. But, as I drove to the store, the car ran fine. It’s only at start-up that this problem occurs. It has never happened at any other time. I changed the plugs about 3 months ago and it was ok until about a month ago… when the problem popped up again. It started up rough last night and, then today, another rough start and the light came on. I will appreciate any help! Thanks!

Is it a duratech or a pushrod engine? Coil on plug or cap and wires?

Suddenly, the car is starting and idling fine… after I replaced the fuel filter.. it was in bad shape and probably was original to the car. Could this have been the problem all along? If it acts up again, I’ll replace the coil again.

not sure about the engine type. it has coil packs and wires, not coil on plugs.

A restricted fuel filter can cause a misfire.

Thanks. I guess I’ll just drive it and see what happens. Maybe the clogged fuel filter has been my problem all along.

It may have been just remember the things to check for if it does pop up again.
